Extra time beckons for pubs in Renfrewshire as World Cup opening hours agreed

Venues in Renfrewshire will be into extra time this summer as additional licensing hours were agreed for the Fifa World Cup.

Renfrewshire Licensing Board has indicated a maximum of 30 minutes added time after the final whistle of all matches to support the hospitality sector during Scotland’s first World Cup since 1998.

With several matches kicking off late at night due to time zone differences, including Scotland’s group games on 14, 19 and 24 June, the decision ensures fans can enjoy the tournament safely and responsibly in local pubs, clubs, and hospitality venues.

The extension is to allow venues to show televised matches and applies only to premises that meet specific criteria, including already showing televised sport as part of their operating plan.

The move follows similar decisions by other Licensing Boards across Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, and will run from 11 June to 19 July 2026.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Licensing Board, said: “The World Cup is a moment of huge national pride with Scotland qualifying for the first time since 1998. We want people across Renfrewshire to enjoy the matches in a safe, well‑managed environment and today’s decision supports both our hospitality sector and our communities.

“By setting out clear conditions and safeguards, we are striking the right balance between celebration and responsibility, as we all look forward to see Scotland on the world stage once again.”

Only indoor areas are covered by the extension, and participating premises must meet several conditions, including notifying both Renfrewshire Council’s licensing team and Police Scotland at least 48 hours before any extended‑hours opening, operating a late‑night curfew for matches beginning after 1am, and no entertainment such as live music, DJs or karaoke continues past the standard licensing hours.

Premises that do not wish to use the extended hours are not required to do so.
