Despite what you might have heard many people say, Paisley is a beautiful holiday destination. It’s got a pretty small population, so you’re not going to get lost in the noise of the big city, but there’s lots to see and do in the town. It’s the home of the Paisley pattern, which you’ve probably seen on clothing, shawls, and other fabrics, and there’s plenty more to do here besides. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or you’re a Paisley veteran, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you prepare for a trip to the town in 2023.

Create your itinerary before you leave

While you’re not going to find the same kind of tourist queues in Paisley that you would in London, it still pays (no pun intended) to know what you’re going to do before you get into the town proper. Attractions like Paisley Abbey and the Thomas Coats church get a fair few visitors, especially in peak tourist season, so it’s a good idea to schedule visits to those places ahead of time. If nothing else, this will give you a good sense of how to spend your time during your getaway!

Bring enough cash to get by

Being a smaller town, Paisley isn’t the kind of place where things cost more than they should, but you should still make sure you’re armed with enough cash to get by regardless. That amount will, of course, look different from person to person, but generally speaking, a £2500 loan would be enough to get you here, get accommodation for a good few days, and get you home after a good time. Many of the most beautiful sights in Paisley are free, after all!

Try to visit in April

The Paisley Beer Festival has become the stuff of legend thanks to its wide variety of refreshing drinks and its convivial atmosphere. Drinkers from around the world flock to Paisley in April in order to experience the festival, and this is one of the most popular and well-attended tourist events that Paisley has to offer, so you need to make sure you set aside a whole day to experience it. Don’t get to the beer festival late – you’ll regret it if you do!

Make sure to explore Paisley Abbey

If you’ve never been inside Paisley Abbey before, you’re in for a treat. It can trace its history all the way back to the 12th century, when Scotland’s High Steward Walter Fitzalan signed a charter to found a priory on his land. Over the years, the Abbey has gone through various restorations, but it’s always retained its rustic mediaeval charm, and going inside is a real experience. You don’t want to miss this gorgeous religious landmark, even if you’re not religious yourself.

Take a walk around the Country Park

Sometimes, even the relatively quiet hustle and bustle of Paisley’s town centre can be a little too much. If you’ve come to Paisley for absolute tranquillity, then you could do a lot worse than a walk around Gleniffer Braes Country Park. The animals are a touch shy, so make sure you don’t accost them as they go about their daily lives; instead, try to take a walk around the park and immerse yourself in its natural wonders. Visiting at dusk creates an absolutely breathtaking atmosphere.

Check out the Coats Observatory

If you thought Scotland’s oldest public observatory would be in one of its major urban centres, then you’d be wrong. It’s actually in Paisley, and you’ll be able to spot it immediately from its characteristic domed spire. The building itself is beautiful, but if you go inside, you’ll be able to learn more about the history of the place and the things that it has observed over the years. If you’ve got any interest in space and the cosmos whatsoever, then you need to set aside time for this little wonder.

Don’t forget the Sma’ Shot Cottages

As a more realistic representation of what life in Paisley has historically been like, the Sma’ Shot Cottages should definitely be on your travel itinerary. They give a unique and intriguing snapshot of what life was like during the 18th century in Paisley, with a weaver’s cottage on full display. The local guides who take you around the cottages are knowledgeable and friendly, so be sure to ask them any questions you might have about what you’re being shown!

Take a break with Blend Coffee

Many Paisley residents and tourists alike agree that Blend Coffee is one of the best cafes in the town, so if you’ve taken a long walk and you’re in need of a break, stop by this charming little location. Paisley’s Blend Coffee is one of three locations in Scotland, so this is a thoroughly local phenomenon. You’ll find coffee and cakes for sale, as well as tea and other refreshments, all wrapped up in a beautiful cafe that will make you want to sit and people-watch for hours.

Respect the town

Paisley is a small town compared with the likes of Glasgow or Edinburgh. It’s very happy to have visitors, and much of its economy is tourism-based, but it also has its own unique character and lifestyle. While you’re there, try to be respectful of local traditions and customs. Of course, this goes for anywhere you visit, but don’t litter and don’t cause a fuss if you can help it. Explore the town, take in its beauty, and leave it exactly as you found it, and the residents will thank you.
