Business Regulation and Trading Standards officers from Renfrewshire Council will be out and about at DIY stores across Renfrewshire from 8 to 12 June to promote asbestos awareness to local firms.
Local trades people will be able to get information and advice on dealing safely with asbestos from council staff who will be visiting the following premises:
Monday 8 June, 8.30am – 1pm – B and Q, Renfrew Road, Paisley
Tuesday 9 June, 8.30am – 1pm – Howdens Joinery, Baltic Business Park, Murray Street, Paisley
Thurs 11 June, 8.30am – 1pm – Screwfix, Greenhill Business Park, Paisley
Friday 12 June 8.30am – 1pm – Jewson, Greenhill Road, Paisley
Councillor Eddie Devine, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board said:
“Around 5,000 people die every year as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres, making it the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
“This campaign is about highlighting the risks and the steps people can take to protect themselves. We hope that by signposting trades people to information we can make them aware of the risks, think twice, and take precautions to stay safe.”
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have produced a free web app for phones, tablets and laptops which helps workers to identify where they could come into contact with asbestos material as they go about their day-to-day work.
The app is downloadable at:

Those who attend the roadshow will also be able to find out about joining the council’s Trusted Trader scheme which helps consumers choose a reliable trader from an online directory of local firms.
The website allows previous customers to comment on their experience of dealing with the firm and rate their work.
Trusted Trader member firms agree to adhere to the scheme’s code of practice and have their business practices monitored by the council’s Trading Standards service.
