Five drivers caught in vehicle emissions crackdown.
A two-day blitz on pollution producing vehicles saw Renfrewshire Council catching five offenders.
Community safety wardens took to the streets of Paisley town centre to check whether vehicles emissions were within the legal requirements.
Of the 263 vehicles tested, five vehicles failed and were issued with £60 fixed-penalty notices.
Taxis and private hire vehicles were also tested. Thirty-one taxis were inspected by the council’s licensing section – with one driver given an immediate suspension for failing the emissions test. The suspension was lifted as soon as the faults were fixed.
The tests were carried out at Wallneuk, Renfrew Road, Paisley, on 27 and 28 March in partnership with officers from Police Scotland, who were responsible for pulling over the vehicles from traffic.
Councillor Eddie Devine, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board, said, “Poorly maintained vehicles that emit excess emissions can contribute to the high levels of pollution within our town centres and urban areas.
“A key element of working towards a greener Renfrewshire is to tackle air quality hotspots together with the community.
“Our vehicle emissions campaign is a highly-visible reminder to drivers that it’s their responsibility to make sure their vehicles comply with the law.
“The fact more than 98% of vehicles passed the emissions test show that Renfrewshire’s motorists are taking their responsibility seriously.”
All drivers fined on the day will have the penalty waived if they are able to produce evidence the emissions problem has been fixed within 14 days of the offence.
The police also detected a number of minor road offences during the testing, including faulty brake lights and tyre defects.
All drivers were also given a council leaflet containing information on the problems caused by vehicle idling.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”20683″ img_size=”full” animate=”afb”][vc_separator icon=”star”][vc_column_text]Courtesy of Renfrewshire Council.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
