The latest statistics show Renfrewshire’s school leavers as ranked joint second in Scotland for positive destinations out of all 32 council areas.

Almost 98% of Renfrewshire young people go into positive destinations, such as apprenticeships and training, college or university, or going into employment when they leave school.

Renfrewshire has significantly improved the numbers of young people going into positive destinations, up from fifth last year and tenth in 2024.

Renfrewshire Council’s Children’s Services have developed strong partnership working between schools and local partners to develop career pathways and vocational opportunities. Education teams work in partnership with Skills Development Scotland and Invest in Renfrewshire with ongoing support from Renfrewshire Local Employability Partnership.

The Council also work closely with Developing the Young Workforce West to create opportunities for school pupils and school leavers. The coaching and mentoring Career Ready programme by the charity of the same name is well established in a number of Renfrewshire secondary schools. A traineeship programme has also been piloted by the Council’s Soft Facilities Management team.

Renfrewshire Pathfinders programme, launched in September 2024, offers integrated work placements, qualifications and awards, and enhanced support to young people moving from school to attend West College Scotland, Invest in Renfrewshire, or other suitable destinations.

A key part of the destination success comes from listening to the voices of our young people. Their feedback shapes the opportunities and pathways on offer.

Education Convener Councillor Emma Rodden said: “Renfrewshire being ranked joint second for positive destinations of school leavers is a testament to the hand work and ambition we have for our young people. Renfrewshire schools and education teams have built strong partnerships with employers, national agencies, and colleges to create meaningful pathways that give every young person the chance to succeed.

“I’m incredibly proud of the commitment shown by our schools and central education team. We will continue to work hard for our young people and support them into positive, sustained destinations that meet their needs and aspirations.”
