June 26, 2025History lovers will be fascinated by Florence Nightingale’s legacy in healthcare at a free u3a talk on Thursday 3 July.
Guest speaker, Barbara Graham shares the uphill battle Florence Nightingale had to change nursing practices. Barbara, with the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Learning, reveals Florence the campaigner as well as her ‘lady with the lamp’ image.

Paisley and District u3a’s meeting starts at 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall in Mill Street (PA1 1ND), with refreshments from 1.30pm.
Barbara Graham said: “Florence Nightingale is known for her work during the Crimean War of 1853-56 but she continued to campaign for public health reforms throughout her long life, despite impaired health. Even today, we benefit from her vision of how health care should be delivered.”
u3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell said: “There have been many health pioneers and we are curious to learn about Florence Nightingale’s contribution. This talk will explain the policies she fought to introduce which later saved so many lives.”
