November 28, 2024People aged 66 and older are being encouraged to pop along to an event in Paisley to find out if they can get Pension Credit.
Advice Works will be in The Piazza shopping centre on Friday 29 November between 10am and 4pm with advisers on hand to talk about Pension Credit to anyone over the state pension age. They will also talk to people about any other benefits they may be entitled to and will take details to call residents back.
Around 2,500 households in Renfrewshire have people aged 66 or older on a low income who aren’t claiming Pension Credit.
Pension Credit tops up the pension of anyone over the State Pension age who is eligible for it, helping them with rent and other housing costs. It can be claimed even if someone has other income, savings or owns their home.
It can also be backdated by up to three months, which would mean anyone claiming now could receive the Winter Fuel Payment.
Councillor Jacqueline Cameron, depute leader of Renfrewshire Council and chair of the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee, said: “Across Renfrewshire, there are thousands of people eligible who aren’t claiming Pension Credit. With costs for food, gas and electricity remaining much higher than they used to be, so it is important people get the money they are entitled to.
“I would urge everyone to check out if they could be eligible by coming along to this event at any time between 10am and 4pm.”
Appointments to check for Pension Credit or claim for any other benefit can be made with either Advice Works (0300 300 1238) or Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau (0141 889 2121).
People can apply for Pension Credit on the UK Government website.
Friends and relatives of anyone aged 66 or older are encouraged to talk with them about checking if they could be entitled to Pension Credit.
