Renfrewshire parents and carers who have received a school clothing grant will get an additional £50 winter clothing payment for each eligible child.

The additional money will help families buy additional clothing for the winter months and is part of a wide range of support to help people through the cost-of-living crisis and Renfrewshire Council’s Fairer Renfrewshire programme.

The money will be paid into bank accounts by Friday 31 October to anyone who has received a school clothing grant for this school year (August 2025 to June 2026).

More than 5,500 children across Renfrewshire have received a school clothing grant this school year, totalling to more than £740,000 paid out to families.

There are also more than 4,400 children in receipt of free school meals who are further supported by additional payments from the Council to help with costs over the main school holidays.

Councillor Jacqueline Cameron, depute leader of Renfrewshire Council and chair of the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee, said: “Costs continue to remain higher than before the cost-of-living crisis and we want to ensure our families get the support they need.

“The £50 winter clothing grant can help families buy additional clothing for children and young people during the winter months.

“For families, maximising their income and keeping money in their pockets is incredibly important. For anyone who hasn’t applied for a school clothing grant or free school meals this year and is entitled to them, I would encourage them to apply and start receiving these payments going forward.

“Ensuring families get all the support they’re entitled to is hugely important and we strongly recommend getting advice. We have extra appointments available during Talk Money Week (3 to 7 November) with advisors from Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau and the Council’s Advice Works team. Whether you’re wondering if you’re entitled to support, need help balancing your budget, or worried about debt, our friendly and independent advisors are happy to help.”

Appointments are available Monday 3 to Friday 7 November 2025 between 9am and 4pm each day.

Book an appointment for advice online or call Advice Works on 0300 300 1238 or Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau on 0141 889 2121.

Parents and carers of school-age children or younger can also get support through two bespoke services.

For those with children in secondary school or attend Mary Russell or Riverbrae schools, advice is available through the Schools Support Service, run by Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau.

For those with children in primary school, nursery, or younger, advice is available through the Family Advice service, run by the Council’s Advice Works team.

Make appointments for money and benefits advice on Renfrewshire Council’s website.
