Erskine celebrates 100 years of caring for veterans

Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has commended the charity Erskine for providing “unwavering care and support to our ex-service men and women for over a century”.
In response to the devastation of World War I and the insufficient hospital facilities to care for our veterans who were wounded in war, Erskine was founded on 29th March 1916 and has cared for veterans from every major conflict since 1916. The hospital was originally known as the Princess Louise Hospital for Limbless Sailors and Soldiers and was located at what is now the Mar Hall Hotel.
Gavin Newlands MP has congratulated Erskine on their celebrating their centenary by lodging an Early Day Motion (EDM) in the House of Commons:
“That this House congratulates the charity Erskine for providing unwavering care and support to our ex-service men and women for 100 years; notes that Erskine was founded on 29th March 1916 in response to the devastation of World War I and the insufficient hospital facilities to care for veterans who were wounded in war; recognises that Erskine has cared for 85,000 veterans from every major conflict since 1916; and wishes Erskine continued success in its charitable endeavours long into the future.”
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“Like many people in Renfrewshire and across Scotland, I am immensely proud of Erskine’s proud tradition of providing unwavering care and support to our ex-servicemen and women for over a century.
“I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit one of Erskine’s care homes in my constituency, to meet some of our veterans who reside in the home and to see first-hand the excellent work that Erskine do day-in, day-out.
“I look forward to visiting Erskine again in the future and to continue to support such a worthy charity in any way that I possibly can as they pass the centenary milestone of their journey.”
Lieutenant Colonel Steve Conway, Chief Executive of Erskine, said:
“I think it is fitting that this year we pay tribute to all those staff and volunteers who have cared for over 85,000 veterans to such a very high standard and also thank all our supporters, past and present, that enable us to continue our work.
“I hope as many people as possible will be able to join us at our events to learn a little more about our history and join us in our celebrations.”
