Renfrewshire residents invited to have their say on local play spaces in council survey

Renfrewshire Council is running a public consultation of play spaces across the area to help improve outdoor play opportunities for children, young people, and families. 

The Outdoor Play Spaces survey will evaluate the quality, location, and range of outdoor play facilities in Renfrewshire, including equipped play areas, bike and skate parks, ball game courts, multi-use games areas, and outdoor fitness areas.  

The findings will help shape future investment in play infrastructure. 

To support the assessment, the Council is seeking feedback from young people, parents and carers, community councils, and local groups about the current provision of play spaces and how it can be improved. 

Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener of Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board said:    
“Play is a vital part of childhood and contributes to children’s mental and physical health as well as their wellbeing and development. We want to ensure that all children and young people in Renfrewshire have access to high-quality, safe places to play, no matter where they live. 

“This public consultation is a chance for Renfrewshire residents to shape the future of their local communities. We’re eager to hear your views on how accessible, inclusive, and varied local play opportunities are, and how they can be improved for all children and young people.” 

There are several ways for the public to get involved. The Council has launched a series of targeted surveys for different groups, alongside a map-based survey where people can comment directly on specific play spaces. 

The survey opens on Thursday 1 May and will close on Friday 13 June 2025.   

The feedback gathered will directly inform the Play Sufficiency Assessment, which will be published later in 2025. 

This is part of the ongoing work towards forming the new Local Development Plan. The plan will set out strategy and proposals for the use of land and buildings in Renfrewshire up to 2038 and beyond. 

Councillor Jim Paterson, Convener of Planning and Climate Change Policy Board at Renfrewshire Council, said:

“By sharing your experiences and ideas, you’ll help us create play spaces that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of local families.”
