December 23, 2022Repton School in Derbyshire has earned a flurry of awards and accolades this year, most recently receiving a glowing review in the Tatler Schools Guide 2023. The guide recognised the independent School’s reputation for producing well-rounded, confident young adults who are ready to thrive in the modern world.
Repton’s other achievements in 2022 include gaining “The Week” magazine’s “Great for Sport” accolade and the title of “Happiest Boarding School” from online guide Muddy Stilettos. In addition, this year, Repton pupils garnered exceptional GCSE and A Level results, with more than 50% of A Level entries awarded an A* or A grade.
“Excelling Across the Board”
Repton’s Tatler Schools Guide 2023 listing praises the School, highlighting Repton as a fantastic option for those looking to send their child to a thoroughly modern and forward-thinking school. The guide credits Repton for “excelling across the board” and being “fantastically diverse,” describing pupils who are “grounded without a trace of arrogance.”
Of course, academic excellence is a prerequisite for a stellar education, and Repton doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Following the 2022 summer exam period, Repton Sixth Form pupils celebrated an outstanding set of A Level results. The good news continued as GCSE pupils also received top marks, with grades 7 to 9 awarded to more than 60% of entries.
In the spring, Repton’s through-school STEM programme made the shortlist for the Education Business STEM Award 2022. With a focus on real-world applications and practical learning led by passionate teachers, judges selected the School’s STEM programme from 32,000 schools nationwide as one of the best and most accessible to pupils.
Sporting Prowess
However, Repton isn’t all about studying and top marks: Reptonians flourish both in and out of the classroom.
Proving its renown as a sporting school, Repton has lately secured the title of “Great for Sport” in the “Best of the Best” Schools Guide from current affairs magazine “The Week.” The guide mentioned the School’s history of sporting prowess and its reputation for nurturing athletes, referencing Repton’s “Sport for All” ethos: “All pupils are encouraged to participate in physical exercise and reap the wider psychological benefits of personal challenge and teamwork.”
All Repton pupils take part in sports at least three times per week, and more than 80% of Reptonians represent their School in at least one sport. Thanks to world-class coaches and a multi-million-pound sports centre, Repton has accumulated an enviable collection of silverware across its focus sports of cricket, football, hockey, netball, tennis, and swimming.
Individual sporting and athletic potential aside, Repton values what sport brings out in every pupil: teamwork, resilience, leadership skills, and a sense of pride and achievement in themselves and their teams.
Happy and Healthy Pupils
Wholeness is one of the key guiding values at Repton. The School’s Headmaster Mark Semmence notes that academic accomplishment shouldn’t come at the expense of a broad education that nurtures pupils intellectually, physically, and emotionally. “We recognise that exam results are the price of entry,” he writes, “but life skills are the ticket to success.”
As a result, Repton’s award-winning pastoral care and all-round brilliance have earned the School the title of the UK’s “Happiest Boarding School” in the 2022 Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards.
Additionally, several pupil-led initiatives, including the introduction of a therapy dog and Well-being Areas in Boarding Houses, have led to the Independent School of the Year awards placing Repton on the shortlist for the Student Well-Being award.
Regardless of awards, perhaps the highest distinction for a school is the approval of its pupils. One Reptonian, Hattie, describes the pastoral care as “amazing.” She adds: “I know that if I was ever struggling there are multiple places that I could go for help such as my tutor, housemistress, and chaplain to name a few.” There’s no doubt that Repton is a thriving school filled with happy and healthy pupils.
