There is plenty to see and do in Paisley, Scotland during the winter and spring months. From concerts, to festivals, to farmers markets, to museums, you’ll be able to easily find something to do while you’re waiting for warm summer days to roll back around.

On the coldest of days, however, you might find yourself getting antsy for warmer weather. If you’re ready to take a break from Paisley, now is a great time to plan a holiday abroad to a warm location.

There are plenty of locations that are waiting to be explored, including some locations that are a favorite of Scottish Expats! If you’re ready to go abroad for a few weeks, consider the following three locations.

Mellieha, Malta

Located in the central Mediterranean, Malta is a tiny archipelago that is known for its rich history and its beautiful shorelines. Those that are looking for a traditional beach holiday with a little bit of history thrown in will want to head to Mellieha.

Located on the northern part of the island, staying in Mellieha provides access to Mellieha Bay. Mellieha Bay is Malta’s largest sandy beach. The waters near the shore are calm and shallow, which is perfect for families with young children. However, deeper waters away from the shore are perfect for those looking to partake in watersports, including scuba diving.

Mellieha also has public transportation options that allow visitors to explore some of the historic locations around the island. Malta’s capital city, Valletta, has over 200 historical locations to explore. Many tourists also enjoy the chance to visit the Megalithic Temples that are found throughout the island. Malta’s Megalithic Temples are some of the oldest structures in the world.

After lounging on the beach and exploring the island, visitors can enjoy dining at the restaurants found in Mellieha. One dish Malta is known for is rabbit stew!

Kauai, Hawaii

Not only does Kauai provide access to the beaches that Hawaii is famous for, but it also has plenty of lush locations to explore. From shorelines to lounge on, trails to hike, and canyons and coastlines to see, there is plenty for tourists to do here.

There are three main beaches to visit in Kauai: Tunnels Beach, Polihale State Park and Poipu Beach. All three beaches offer sandy shores, beautiful waters, coral, and plenty of wildlife. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes water conditions at these beaches can be dangerous, depending on the weather.

Hikers will enjoy the chance to explore the Kalalau Trail, a 22-mile trail that goes throughout the island. Those who make this hike will be able to explore the cliffs, coastlines, and waterfalls that Kauai has to offer. Hiking the trail in its entirety takes around two days and requires a permit.

Those that aren’t ready to hike the Kalalau Trail will still get a chance to explore Kauai’s waterfalls, including Wailua Falls and Waipoo Falls. Mount Waialeale, which is one of the volcanoes on the island, also has trails and waterfalls to explore.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Belize has several islands to explore, but one of the most popular tourist destinations is Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye is the perfect location for those that are looking for a beach holiday that includes snorkeling and diving.

Ambergris Caye is right near Belize’s Barrier Reef, which is the second largest coral reef in the world. There are several popular snorkeling locations, including Shark Ray Alley. Shark Ray Alley allows tourists to get up close to gentle nurse sharks and rays. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is another popular snorkeling location.

Those that are looking to go scuba diving will want to head to the Great Blue Hole. The depths of this location reach down to 400 feet deep, which means only those with prior diving experience should explore it. While there is coral to explore in this location, visitors will also get the chance to see some of the larger species that call Ambergris Caye home, including sea turtles.

While many people that visit Ambergris Caye spend their days snorkeling and diving, there is also plenty to do on the island itself. Hiking the Ecological Nature Trail allows people to take a guided tour of the jungle.

Final thoughts

If you’re ready for a warm holiday abroad, you have your pick of places to choose from! Mellieha, Kauai, and Ambergris Caye are just some of the places you’ll want to consider. Just remember— if you’re planning a trip abroad, you’ll want to make your plans several months in advance.
