San Sebastian may not be as popular as Barcelona, Mallorca or Bilbao, but it’s nonetheless one of the most beautiful and loved tourist destinations in Spain. The charming town has so much to offer and anyone that has ever visited San Sebastian has fallen in love with it. If you are planning to visit Spain, we are here to tell you why you should spend your holiday in San Sebastian.

Accommodation options

While it is a fairly small town, there is certainly no shortage of resorts, guest homes and hotels in San Sebastian. You are certain to find the perfect accommodation option, suited to your needs, whether that’s near the beach or in the heart of the old town. There are many adult-only hotels as well as family-friendly resorts with entertainment for the whole family. You may also choose to spend your holiday in a luxury accommodation or go for one of the highly affordable options.

Lush beaches

San Sebastian has not one, not two but three beautiful beaches you can enjoy during your holiday. La Concha beach is the biggest and most popular out of the three, however, all of them are stunning and perfect for a lazy day soaking up the sun and enjoying the turquoise blue waters. While you are there, you may also enjoy one of the many water sports activities with your family and friends.

Historic architecture

The city of San Sebastian is absolutely filled with historically significant buildings. The Old Town, in particular, is where you will find the magnificent churches and cathedrals, all within walking distance from each other. Take a stroll around the beautiful town and witness the amazing gothic architecture of the local buildings, taking you back in time hundreds of years.

Delicious foods

San Sebastian is often referred to as the food capital of Spain and there is a good reason for it. The town boasts countless Michelin star restaurants – in fact, it has more Michelin stars per square metre than any other city in the world. The local restaurants are innovative with their menus, giving traditional seafood dishes, tapas and other meals a unique twist. There is a quirky cafe or a fine dining restaurant at nearly every corner in San Sebastian and each will make you fall in love with Spanish cuisine all over again.

Museums and galleries

As an old town with lots of history, San Sebastian is home to plenty of museums and galleries you may visit during your stay. Some of them are free while others have a small admission fee, however, all of them are a great opportunity to learn more about the rich ancient history of Spain and the origins of their unique culture.

Hiking locations

If you enjoy an active day out during your holidays, San Sebastian also has plenty of beautiful hiking locations. Mount Urgull is particularly popular amongst visitors – it only takes around 30 minutes to get to the top but the panoramic views from your hike are simply breathtaking. While you’re in the area, make sure to also visit the Mota Castle and the San Telmo museum free of charge.
