Glasgow Airport buzzing for start of summer holidays
Scotland’s holiday airport is set to handle more than 100,000 passengers this weekend.
Holidaymakers from all over Scotland jetting off to the sun as schools finish for the summer will descend on Glasgow Airport, which serves a wide range of short, medium and long-haul leisure destinations.
Today (Friday) is Glasgow Airport’s busiest day of the year so far with around 33,000 passengers travelling through the airport.
From Friday to Monday the airport will handle around 110,000 passengers – slightly up against the same weekend in 2009.
The most popular sunshine destinations among Glasgow Airport passengers this weekend are Palma, Tenerife, Alicante and Dalaman. The most popular city routes are London, Amsterdam, Belfast and Dubai.
Some of the world’s largest and most successful airlines and holiday companies will operate from Glasgow this weekend including Thomson, Thomas Cook, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and easyJet.
New airline additions for 2010 at Glasgow Airport include Barrhead Travel and Kiss Flights, both of whom serve a range of popular mediterranean holiday spots.
Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Today is our busiest day of the year so far and it leads into the busiest weekend.
“It’s fantastic to see so many holidaymakers passing through the airport, particularly given the challenges faced by the aviation industry recently.
“It demonstrates that despite a slow recovery from the global recession, Scots do not want to give up their summer holiday.
“We are delighted to be the starting point for what many consider the highlight of their year, and with so many holiday flights from Glasgow we are looking forward to a lot of hard work over the next few days but also a fantastic atmosphere!”
