Tony McManus

Tony McManus

Tony McManus, born 1965, is a Scottish steel-string guitarist of Irish descent. English guitarist John Renbourn described him as “the best Celtic guitarist in the world”. His first self-titled album was released in 1996 on Greentrax Recordings.

Tony McManusHis second album, entitled Pourquoi Quebec?, was recorded in Quebec, Canada and released on the same label in January. His third album, Ceol More, was released in 2002 and achieved widespread critical acclaim. It exhibits not only McManus’s proficiency as a guitarist, but also as an arranger, including a version of Charles Mingus’s Goodbye Porkpie Hat. He has recorded duets with noted Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser as well as recently releasing an album with bassist Alain Genty, entitled Singing Sands.

His ability to reach audiences unfamiliar with traditional music is remarkable – he is quite comfortable at predominantly classical events such as the Dundee and Derry Guitar Festivals (appearing six times between the two) and even The Bogotá International Guitar Festival where he followed virtuoso Eduardo Fernandez.

Tony McManus brings a deep respect for traditional music to bear on all he does. Wherever his journey takes him next it is sure to be an exciting ride.
