If you’ve passed Glasgow Airport or travelled along Abbotsinch Road recently then you may have noticed some buildings under construction in an adjacent field.

The 52-hectare site is being transformed into Scotland’s home for manufacturing innovation, known as the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland or AMIDS for short. It’s a collaborative project we’re working on with colleagues at the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise.

And the first two facilities are on schedule to open next year, driving forward manufacturing research and development and supporting manufacturers of all shapes and sizes, and from all sectors, to innovate and grow.

Affordable medicines

The Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre is a pioneering project led by CPI and including founding industry partners AstraZeneca and GSK to solve the major challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry and accelerate access to affordable medicines. External construction work on the centre has just been completed with the focus now on its internal fitout, which includes a suite of clean rooms to develop cutting-edge processes.

Once completed in early 2022, the centre is expected to support 100 jobs and generate £200million investment in its first five years and from early next year, companies will be able to visit and discuss accessing the transformative technology.

Scotland’s flagship facility

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, known as NMIS, will make manufacturers more competitive and boost the skills of the workforce by bringing industry, researchers and the public sector together.

It is operated by the University of Strathclyde and supported by the Scottish Government alongside a range of skills, enterprise and education agencies, with the Council also part of the NMIS group.

1500 tonnes of structural steel are now in place and work on the collaboration hub and window to the world well both underway, the completed building on schedule to open in Autumn 2022.

At 1.5 times the size of the Hampden Park pitch and with distinct heather-coloured cladding, the finished building will be easily spotted next to Glasgow Airport.

Business incentives to take on new staff

Employers across Renfrewshire – including within the Council – have created more than 500 different job opportunities for young people since the outset of the pandemic.

Mike Anderson, who runs Paisley-based Anderson Floor Warming and Renewables, is one such employer, taking on teenager Taylor Herd through the Young Person’s Guarantee Employer Recruitment Incentive.

Mike says: “Normally we would take on an apprentice as it’s important we bring on the next generation. We worked with the employability team at the Council to recruit Taylor, who’d completed a pre-apprentice plumbing course and has the right attitude, wanting to work and gets on well with the other engineers. The recruitment incentive is a more viable way to take on new employees, letting us see if they suit the position and helping bring young blood into the industry.”

There’s employer incentives, training and funding available to help companies and if you think you could create a job for a young person and take on staff then call our employability team Invest in Renfrewshire on 0300 300 1180 or email ypguarantee@renfrewshire.gov.uk
