Dining rooms are where your family and friends make memories by sharing a meal and talking about you. So, it’s essential that enough lighting is present in the dining room to avoid incidents like cutting your finger while eating.

For instance, a crystal chandelier for dining room is perfect if you’re looking for a chandelier that creates a visual focal point and encourages the atmosphere of intimacy or gives off that romantic vibe.

Identifying the correct measurements

There are three steps that you could take to determine the measurements for your new chandelier. As long as you’ll follow them, there’s no doubt that you’d find the right size for you.

Step #1. Measure the chandelier’s width

To do this, you would have to find out the length and width of the room then add the two values before converting its measurement unit of feet to inches.

The result would serve as your width or the diameter for your chandelier.

Take a dining room with the measurements of 10′ x 18′, for example. In this way, you would find out that a chandelier with a 28″ diameter is suitable for the room regardless of its shape.

If you need more help, you could even utilize the room’s square footage to estimate the chandelier’s ideal size proportional to space.

You could calculate the square footage by multiplying the width and the length of the room. So, if you had a result that’s under 90 square feet, your chandelier should have a diameter of 19″.

However, if it’s between 90-225, the recommended diameter should be at 20-29″. Meanwhile, an over 30″ in diameter should be upheld if the room size is 225-400.

Now, if it’s more than 400 square feet, we suggest getting a large chandelier.

Still unsure? Then you ought to try measuring your dining table.

Let’s assume that you want this chandelier to be the centerpiece of the dining room or have your open floor plan. Then the diameter of the chandelier should satisfy one-half to two-thirds of the determined table’s width.

Do you have a ceiling that’s more than eight feet in height? If so, we recommend using this as a basis for your chandelier’s size. And make sure that it has a six inches clearance on the table’s each side by ensuring that the chandelier’s size is less than one foot compared to the table’s width.

Step #2. Measure it by the chandelier’s height

Try to measure the ceiling’s height from its site of installation to the floor. And make sure that the installation site has at least a 4 feet distance from the adjacent walls.

For every foot that you measure, estimate the height of the chandelier by 2.5″ to 3″ before multiplying it to the initial measurement of the ceiling’s height. Then convert the unit to inches.

So, if your dining room has a ceiling height of 8 feet, expect that a 24 inches chandelier should be ideal for the available space.

Kindly note that this calculation is only applicable for room sizes that are proportional to their ceiling height. If this is not the case for you, we’re afraid you would have to use a different method.

Step #3. Identify the chain length

Suppose that your ceiling has a measurement that is less than 8 feet. For this, it would be a wise move to purchase a 30″ to 34″ chandelier starting from the tabletop up to the chandelier’s bottom and then center it over the dining table.

Yet, if the ceiling is higher than the standard eight feet height, a clearance of 36″ to 40″ would be perfect.

To get this, you would have first to calculate the ceiling and the tabletop in the inches unit then subtract it with the suggested installation height, which is either 32″ for ceiling heights in the range of 8 feet or less, and 38″ for those that exceed the standard ceiling height.

After doing these steps, you would have to subtract the chandelier height you got from doing step 2, and in no time, you’ll have the chandelier’s chain length.
