Just because the UK is in lockdown doesn’t mean that spring isn’t coming. The sun is already staying out longer, and the temperatures are warming up, and given that homeowners are having to stay home 24/7, they are starting to feel that urge to clean everything in sight. If this sounds like you, you may be overwhelmed at where to start your spring cleaning tasks around the house. Here’s a quick list of tasks that will help get your home ready for spring.

Tidy and Purge

Organising and getting rid of any unwanted or unused items will help keep your home clean and tidy over the long run, so this is a great first step when starting spring cleaning chores. Tackle each room one at a time and challenge yourself to get rid of anything you haven’t used or even noticed in the last six months. Once everything has been pared down, even if it’s only slightly, your remaining items are much easier to organise and you’ll feel as though your home has room to breathe.

Clean Your Furniture

The usual spots like countertops, bathroom fixtures and floors all need cleaning, but some people don’t consider that their sofas, tables and chairs need a clean after a while too. Give your old sofas new life with a thorough deep clean, either by doing it yourself if you have the means or by hiring professional sofa cleaning services, although this will have to wait until the lockdown is lifted. The same goes for any upholstered furniture, like lounge chairs and dining chairs with upholstered seats and backs. A good deep clean will make your sofa look just like new.

Clean Your Appliances

Your kitchen appliances involve another good task that you can accomplish relatively quickly. Give all of your appliances, including your microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, and kettle, a good once-over. If you have stainless steel appliances, you can take a cloth, soak it in warm water mixed with a mild washing up liquid, and then wipe the surfaces and dry with a towel to prevent water spots. If you can still see fingerprints or other grease marks afterwards, spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth and use that to wipe it down one more time.

Wash Your Windows

The best way to wake up your home after a long, dreary winter is to let the sunshine in as much as possible. Give all the windows in your home a wash, both from the outside and the inside. Hand prints, streaks and stains distract from the view to the outside world and clean and sparkling windows have a greater effect than you may think. Use glass cleaner in a spray bottle and a microfibre towel to get the best results. For a guaranteed streak-proof clean, a good tip is to wash your windows on a cloudy day rather than waiting for a gorgeous sunny day to venture outside. This is because the sun will work against you, drying up the cleaner before you have a chance to wipe it, leaving streaks and spots. If it’s cloudy, you have more time to wipe the windows down and leave them spotless.
