Everyone needs a holiday now and then, but all too often, we tell ourselves that such luxuries will have to wait until we’re feeling a bit flusher. Of course, no one wants to burden themselves with holiday payments they can’t realistically afford, but what if you could get the holiday, you’re dreaming of for a lot less than you imagine? If you know how to plan and where to look for great deals, you can take the holiday you need without breaking the bank. Here are five tips to help you save money on your holiday in 2020.

  • Pick your flight dates carefully

One of the biggest costs involved in a holiday is the flights, particularly if you are flying a long way. To get the best deals on flights, it’s best to start looking as early as possible. Using the search function Google Flights can give you a helpful overview of the flights available for various destinations and airlines as well as the cheapest dates on which you can fly.

  • Consider lots of destinations and airports

If you can be adaptable in your choice of destination and your arrival airport, you are likely to be able to secure a much better price. Rather than head straight for the most popular destination countries, do some research around the best destinations for travellers on a budget. While most people may choose to fly into the main airport in the country, there may well be others that are less well known or not as centrally located. Even if the location of the airport is not exactly where you want to be or will make your transfer more complex, remember that many airports will have excellent public transport links. It could be worth it if the price is right.

  • Sign up for cheap flight alerts

You may be able to find cheaper flights by signing up for flight alerts with the airlines. Many airlines will have tiered pricing with the best deals available for early bookers, so get yourself on the mailing lists, so you are first in the queue when they become available. Also, if you sign up with apps and websites which offer flight alerts for low prices across several airlines, you can compare and choose the best option for you.

  • Search for hotel discount codes

When you have chosen your destination and booked your flights, it’s time to find the best hotel deal you can. There are plenty of comparison sites like booking.com, which help you to find the best rate for a wide range of hotels, and if you lay your hands on a booking.com discount code, you can knock even more off the price. It’s important to check the reviews and ratings for the hotel before you book, but if you’re prepared to do some digging, you don’t need to pay a fortune for luxury.

  • Try to limit yourself to hand luggage

Travelling light means you won’t need to pay to store luggage in the hold, and your check-in process at the airport will be quicker. Packing only the essential items can be very liberating and will also make the travel much easier on your back.
