Are you a golfing fan living in the Paisley area looking for somewhere new to play?  Or maybe one of your New Year resolutions was to take up the game but you aren’t sure where the nearest courses are?  The good news is that there are some amazing courses across the Paisley area – let’s take a look at them.

Paisley Golf Club

The Paisley Golf Club is close to both the town and Glasgow airport within the Glennifer Braes Country Park.  The course sits at 200 metres above sea level so has amazing views across Ben Lomond to the north and is one of the best laid out courses in all of Scotland.

The club was founded back in 1894 and was originally on a different site.  It moved to the current location in the 1940s and the current course was laid out by McKenzie Ross.  Despite its height, the course is relatively flat and offers a great range of challenges.

Ralston Golf Club

Ralston Golf Club is close to Paisley and just 10 minutes from the centre of Glasgow, a par 70 parkland course.  The course was first laid out in the early 1900s when W Fernie, professional from Troon Golf Club, was hired to lay out the course.  The course is open all year round with membership and visitor options.

There is also a clubhouse and restaurant while the course has its own pro shop to stock up on essential supplies.

Barshaw Golf Course

Barshaw Golf Course is ideal if you are a beginner at playing golf or you want to take your kids along for a round.  It is a municipal course that isn’t too testing but a great place to work on those basic skills. There are some par threes around the course.  It is located close to Paisley, near Barshaw Park.

As well as the course, there is a clubhouse and changing rooms as well as a putting area.  There are annual memberships as well as different prices for a single game depending on the time of year.

Elderslie Golf Club

Elderslie Golf Course is a par 70 course that is 6175 yards in length and offers a good challenge for most all levels of golfer.  The course had Newton Woods as a backdrop and makes for a visually stunning course with good playing challenges.  The club was founded in 1909 and was designed by James Braid.

As well as the clubhouse and pro shop, the club also have an indoor golf lounge using the latest sports solutions and flight scope technology to allow you to practice your game in even the worst weather.

Renfrew Golf Club

Renfrew Golf Club was founded back in 1894 as a 9 hole course on land from the Elderslie Estate.  In the 1920s, it was extended to 18 holes and was designed by James Braid. Later extensions saw it become the longest in the west of Scotland with a par of 73.  The current course dates from the 1970s and is known for the variety of trees around it – and the hazards they create.

The course has hosted the Scottish Amateur Championship, the Sunderland of Scotland Masters and the Scottish Regional Qualifier for The Open.  There is a clubhouse and also a pro shop around the course.

Fereneze Golf Club

Fereneze Golf Club is close to both Paisley and Glasgow city centre and is an 18 hole course on mature moorland.  Playing here also offers some great views across the area with the Clyde Valley close by and some days, even Ben Lomond in sight.

The course is over 600 metres above sea level and plays around 6000 yards.  This means it is great for all levels of golfer from amateur to professional.  It is known for having tight fairways that rewards accurate driving as well as challenging sloping greens.  There is also a clubhouse to enjoy a bite to eat or drink afterwards.

Cochrane Castle Golf Club

Cochrane Castle Golf Club is located in Johnstone, just outside Paisley and is a mature parkland course with over 6100 yards length.  The course was established in 1895 and designed by Charlie Hunter within the Cochrane Castle grounds. The course also had its own clubhouse with a range of social events.
