If you don’t love your decor, being in your home can make it feel, well, not homey. Your space should be welcoming and inviting, encouraging you to spend all the time in the world there. It might not be possible to completely start from scratch and buy all new furniture, or renovate to get the home of your dreams, but at the very least, you can make small changes that have big impacts and make you fall in love with your home again.

Reclaim your space

Although it isn’t a decorating tip, getting rid of junk and clearing away clutter can make a huge difference in how you view your space, especially if you have entire rooms dedicated to clutter. Basements, garages, closets, guest bedrooms, and playrooms can become overwhelmed with your belongings over time, and it can be overwhelming to tackle and clear away, but the result is so worth the effort. Not only will you feel less stressed and more in control, but you’ll have your space back to use for function, rather than storage. Tackle one room at a time (maybe once or twice a week), and you’ll have a clutter-free home in no time.

Add an accent piece

It might not be in your interest – or budget – to completely refurnish your entire home, but adding one new piece of furniture or an accent decor piece can make a big difference. New is always inspiring, so if you’re bored with your furniture, adding a piece that matches or contrasts nicely can get you feeling excited about your decor again. If you need advice, do some research and read blogs from designers and brands like Luluna for tips.

You could add something small, like a coffee table, nightstand, or an ornate mirror, or choose a bigger statement piece like a chaise, a new shelving unit, or a sideboard. Whatever you decide, make sure the style matches with the rest of your furniture. The colour doesn’t necessarily have to match perfectly, as contrasting colours can liven up a space and add drama and interest, but be careful, so it doesn’t look mismatched.

Bring the outdoors inside

Adding some greenery to your home can make it feel like a tropical oasis inside, and who wouldn’t want that? You can find inexpensive plants at markets, grocery stores, or home improvement stores, or on second-hand websites like Gumtree that can help liven up your home. If you aren’t a green thumb or have never cared for plants before, you can try some easy plants that are almost impossible to kill, like peace lilies, snake plants, or the ever-so-popular Monstera plant. However, if the idea of taking care of a plant scares you, you can always go the fake plant route and add greenery that way.

Freshen up your walls

One of the quickest and easiest ways to update any room is with a fresh coat of paint on the walls or ceiling! Maybe your wall colour is outdated, or perhaps it just doesn’t match your taste anymore, but regardless of the reason, a new colour will transform the entire space. It can be tricky picking the right colour, especially if you aren’t changing your furniture or other decor and want it to complement the style, but a neutral, timeless colour is always a safe bet. If you want to add some flair, consider an accent wall that’s painted a louder, bolder colour to match an accent in your room. For example, if your walls are off-white, your decor is wood, and your accents have blue and green splashed in them, you could try a blue or green wall to match – just be sure to try out some samples first before going all out.
