Kind-hearted volunteers are making a difference to their local community as they get behind Renfrewshire’s Team Up to Clean Up campaign.

Service users at Milldale Day Opportunities Centre have joined together to learn more about recycling, including setting up a regular recycling group on a Friday to ensure paper, card, yoghurt pots and cans are disposed of correctly.

They also host a weekly litter pick of the local area to keep it clean and tidy and they have been praised by local residents for their hard work.

Laura Deans, Senior Day Service Officer, said: “The weekly litter picks have provided our group with outdoor exercise and the self-motivation to make a difference to their local community.

“We’ve seen members of the group really excited to take part and they even visited a local recycling plant to see what happens to the waste they are recycling.

“They’re delighted to be a part of the Team Up to Clean Up campaign and are readying themselves for summer to ensure visitors to the On-X know they need to ‘Bin it for Linwood’.”

Milldale Day Opportunities provides a day service for adults 18+ with learning disabilities and/or autism.  The service is designed around the individual needs of the people attending the service to enable them to lead as full and independent a life as possible.

They join another Day Opportunities service in supporting the campaign, with the Mirin, leaving from the Lagoon every Thursday to carry out litter picking on Seedhill and Glasgow Road.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “I’m delighted to see this inspiring group of volunteers make such a difference to their local area.

“The Team Up to Clean Up campaign aims to bring everyone together to make Renfrewshire a better place to live and work, and this group are a shining example of the enthusiasm needed to make it a success.

“Thank you to all the volunteers for their hard work and determination, it’s inspiring for the rest of us so let’s keep working together to brighten up our communities.”

The Team Up to Clean Up campaign has been allocated £2.5million across five years to make Renfrewshire a cleaner, brighter place to live, work and visit.

The campaign has seen investment in increased street sweeping, gully cleaning and litter picking programmes, as well as providing the support our communities need to do their bit by organising community litter picks.
