Being in a relationship can be very challenging. Nobody ever said being in love would be easy and it most definitely is not. For a relationship to last a long time it takes a lot of hard work from both partners. There are going to be good times and bad times with plenty of ups and downs along the way. You’re going to fall out and find yourself making up again many times over. If you’re worried that your relationship is on the rocks, but you want to save it if possible, here are some things to try before you pack your bags and say goodbye forever.

Figure Out Why It’s Happened

Before you can do anything about fixing your relationship you need to think about what’s gone wrong. You might have noticed a change in the way your partner behaves, so you need to find out why it’s happening. Nobody knows your partner better than you do, so you’re in the best position to uncover the reason why. Once you know the reason you can work on fixing the problem.

Good Communication is Vital

If a relationship isn’t working, it’s all too easy to get into arguments with each other and simply throw insults back and forth. You shouldn’t be the only one saying something either. Listen to what your partner is saying and think before you reply. Give them the opportunity to speak because it makes them feel valued. It also gives you the time to understand them better.

Do More Things Together

When a relationship is failing, partners tend to go off and do their own thing more and more. Spending quality time together is important if you want things to work out. You might have to do some things you don’t really like but make the effort and give it a try. If you spend more quality time together, you’re more likely to find a solution to the problem.

Consider a Trial Separation

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder so it might just be a trial separation you need. Before you consider divorce or a civil partner dissolution a trial separation is a good way to find out how you really feel. There are often a number of issues that need to be considered, and you might need a separation agreement to be drawn up. Hopefully, after some time apart to gather your thoughts and analyse your feelings, you’ll be ready to rekindle your relationship.

Forget About the Past

If you want your relationship to work, you need to focus on the present rather than the past. Looking back at past mistakes is not going to make you happy. Learn to forgive your partner and move on to better things. Declutter your mind and don’t let the past cloud your judgement.

For a relationship to work there has to be a certain amount of compromise. No one person can have their own way all the time. If you can accept this, your relationship stands a better chance of working.
