Councillors in Renfrewshire today (29 June) approved plans which will see a quarter of a million pounds investment to deliver a series of improvements to the local environment.

The investment will deliver a programme of focused activities which will clean up roadsides and tackle litter and dog fouling hot spots as part of an initial environmental clean-up.

This will be followed by improvements to roads signage and infrastructure as well as additional activities in town centres, neighbourhoods and villages, parks and open spaces- as part of plans to deliver improved environmental standards across Renfrewshire.

Activities will include increased mechanical sweeping and gulley cleaning, a highly visible litter picking presence and Rapid Response Teams working across Renfrewshire.

The campaign will also see the removal of redundant roads infrastructure and the repair, replacement and cleaning of signage across Renfrewshire.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Land, Infrastructure and Environment Board, said: “Our communities have made it clear that they consider having clean streets an absolute priority and we are investing accordingly to tackle the challenges we currently face.

“Litter, dog fouling and waste will be addressed and our roads infrastructure will be revitalised as we look to inject the civic pride back into our communities.

“The quality of our environment plays a substantial part in how people perceive where they live and we want to encourage everyone to become involved, to take pride in their own community and make this campaign their own.

“We will be engaging with local people, schools, businesses and communities to build on the great work currently being undertaken, provide opportunities for local people to participate in community clean ups and encourage everyone to love where they live.

“We want to make Renfrewshire a great place to live, work, visit and invest in and this campaign will go a long way towards delivering those ambitions.”

A high-profile public engagement campaign will be designed to support, and work in partnership, with local people and key partners and empower communities to help them address the local issues that matter to them most.

Included will be a series of seasonal campaigns undertaken to raise awareness, encourage community participation and demonstrate the benefits for people to get involved.

The programme is set to launch in late 2017.
