The deadly gun attack killed 49 people and 53 injured when Omar Mateen opened fire inside popular gay nightclub Pulse.

Provost Anne Hall said: “This violent attack was directed at the LGBT community and is an act of hate. It is completely unacceptable and Renfrewshire stands with everyone across the globe in condemning this terrible loss of life.

“I’m saddened that 49 people lost their lives on Sunday because of one person’s hatred towards their sexuality. My thoughts are with their families, friends and community who will need our support during this time.

“They also need everyone to stand up and speak out against this terrible crime and others that still take place in our society today. By speaking out we are adding our voices to the many worldwide who rightly condemn this attack. No one should be a victim of hate because of their sexual orientation. We all need to stand together in support.

“Events like this show that while we have made great progress towards equality, there is still a way to go and we should not be complacent. It’s important to ensure people are supported and have a voice in the community.”
