Campaigners are set to march through the streets of Paisley next week as part of an international campaign to eliminate violence towards women.

The ‘Reclaim the Night’ procession, which takes place on Wednesday 25 November, launches Renfrewshire’s 16 Days of Action, a local version of the UN’s international campaign.

Last year hundreds of residents took part to raise awareness of the issue by marching together through Paisley Town Centre with placards, signs and enthusiasm which created a tremendous atmosphere for the event.

Supported by Renfrewshire Council alongside Renfrewshire Rising and Renfrewshire Women’s Aid, this year’s procession will start at the University of the West of Scotland at 6pm and progress down the High Street to Dunn Square.

A memorial wreath will be laid before a two minute silence will take place in support of victims of violence. The event will finish outside Paisley Town Hall with a keynote speech from WISE Women’s Frances Monaghan after which participants are invited for tea and coffee in Paisley Abbey.

Councillor Iain McMillan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Social Work, Health and Wellbeing Policy Board, said: “No woman should have to face violence in their lives. This march is a chance for the community to show their support for the cause and provide a united front that this is unacceptable.

“I encourage everyone to attend if they are able to and raise awareness of an important issue.”

The event is free, with no need to register, and all are welcome to take part.
