Help will be on hand next week for Renfrewshire residents hoping the internet can make their lives a little easier as part of Get Online Week 12 – 18 October.

Local events will take place throughout the week to help more people reap the benefits of using the internet – that include saving time and money, and keeping in touch with family and friends more easily.

A series of ‘Tea and Tablet’ drop-in events in Renfrewshire Libraries will help people try out a tablet while the Heritage Centre in Paisley Central Library will host a demo day on Wednesday 16 October for those interested in researching their family history online.

Councillor Mike Holmes, Depute Leader of Renfrewshire Council, said: “While going online is a routine part of many people’s lives, there are still many people across our communities who aren’t part of the digital world.

“We want to make sure everyone can access digital services and our libraries are fully equipped for this as local digital hubs that offer free access to computers and free wifi.

“But we also want to help people develop the skills and confidence to get online and there’s never been a better time to learn how to use the internet or to brush up on the digital skills you may already have. In the long run, using the internet can save you time and money as well as making a wide range of useful information a few clicks away.”

Getting online can bring a wide range of benefits including easy access to:

  • Online banking
  • Managing utilities
  • Comparing quotes and getting a good deal
  • Online shopping
  • Applying for jobs
  • Keeping in touch with friends and family
  • Emailing correspondence as opposed to posting
  • Renewing TV licenses, drivers licenses and passports
  • Planning a journey and booking travel
  • Council and government services
