A Paisley drama group will perform a play to illustrate the change in approaches to mental health.

The Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival will host the production called “Mental Health – Getting Better” in Paisley and Johnstone as part of the 3 week programme of events celebrating mental health.

The play is performed over four short acts starting with the 1697 Bargarran Witches through to the present day.

Creative Director Cammy Fraser said: “the objective of the play is to raise awareness of mental health and to challenge some of the stigma which still exists around the subject.”

He added “People experiencing mental ill health often remain one of the most socially excluded groups; we would like to change that.”

The play’s actors are all local people, many of whom are building their self-esteem as a result. Patricia Tyrrell said “It’s given me a voice. Since I started acting my confidence has risen dramatically. Plus I’ve made new friends too.”

This year’s festival is based around the theme of passion and includes many people from disadvantaged and marginalised groups.

“Mental health – Getting Better” will be performed at 7.30pm at Johnstone Town Hall on October 23rd, at The Wynd Paisley on October 24th and at Paisley Abbey on November 6th. Tickets are £5/3 and can be purchased on the door.
