A Renfrewshire reading group that’s given a literacy boost to more than 50 families is gearing up for a new term after winning a national award.

The Council-run Pizza Reading Group recently scooped silver in Education Scotland’s ‘Transforming Lives Through Partnership’ award, in recognition of the valuable work it does.

The group has been offering reading support to children and their families in West Johnstone and Ferguslie since 2012, and to Linwood families since 2013.

Councillor Jacqueline Henry, Renfrewshire Council’s Convener of Education and Children, said: “The Pizza Reading Group is a fantastic initiative that boosts literacy support in areas that have high levels of deprivation, and I’m delighted its hard work has been recognised by Education Scotland.

“The team works closely with primary schools in West Johnstone, Ferguslie and Linwood to offer reading support to families. The group takes place after school, once a week and runs for 12 weeks. It helps to break down barriers to learning and families are encouraged to take part in activities including reading, arts and crafts, games and share pizza.

“It’s relaxed, informal and the feedback we get from families who’ve taken part is extremely positive, as it helps to build confidence in children and parents.”

Staff are currently planning the groups for the 2015/2016 term.
