Red alert as Fire Engine Rally returns to Johnstone

Fire Engine Rally 20

Vintage vehicles from through the ages will once again descend on Johnstone when the annual fire engine rally returns to the town.

The ever-popular event will be in the town’s Houstoun Square on Saturday 15 August for a full afternoon of family fun.

Fire engines from decades past will leave Johnstone Fire Station at 11am and parade down Thorn Brae to the town centre.

They will be on display until 4pm, giving visitors young and old the chance to see machines lovingly kept alive by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Heritage Trust.

Attractions on in Houstoun Square during the day will include birds of prey, a bouncy castle and a selection of stalls.

Local firefighters will also be on hand to demonstrate fire safety, including showing people what the impact can be of a chip pan bursts into flames.

The council-organised event has been held in Renfrewshire for years but 2014 saw it move from Paisley to a new home in Johnstone town centre.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall will be there on the day and said: “The Fire Engine Rally is always a popular and well-attended family favourite and I am sure this year will be no different.

“It’s always good fun to get out and about and meet people at this type of event, and the fire engines are always a popular sight with young and old.

“Holding events like this in the centre of the town will help bring people in and hopefully bring benefits to local traders.”
