Renfrewshire Council’s Flexicare service has issued an appeal for new volunteers.

The service, which supports children and young people with autism and learning disabilities, celebrated its 25thbirthday last year. Training for a new batch of service volunteers is scheduled to begin next month.

Councillor Iain McMillan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Social Work, Health and Wellbeing Policy Board, said: “Flexicare does some really valuable work helping those with autism or learning difficulties enjoy activities they might not otherwise get the chance to do. Taking someone swimming, ten-pin bowling or to the cinema can make such a difference in their life.”

“The volunteers get just as much out of it as the service users, building long-term friendships with the people they befriend and also their fellow volunteers. At the recent Flexicare awards, people were being recognised for five, ten and even twenty years of volunteering service and I think that shows just how much they get out of being in the Flexicare family.”

“Volunteers can have all sorts of reasons for getting involved. We have a lot of people who just want to give something back in their spare time, but also people who recognise that volunteering can give them the skills they will need for a career in social care. Whatever their motivation, I’d urge anyone reading to give it a try.”
