A Paisley hairdressing trainee has beaten the cream of Scottish apprentices across all trades to be named Scottish Training Federation Apprentice of the Year.

Reece Phimister, from the town’s Napier Hair and Beauty salon, was announced overall winner of the title on Tuesday evening (19 May) at a swanky ceremony held in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament building.

Nominated for the award by his training organisation, Ambition Centre for Training, 19-year-old Reece was one of three finalists who saw off tough competition from more than 50 young trainees across Scotland.

‘Hearing my name read out as the winner was beyond perfect. I’ve wanted to be a hairdresser forever, and I can’t express how grateful I am to my employer, Elaine Napier, for everything she’s done and for giving me the chance to fulfil my dream, and to the trainers at ACT for all their hard work and for having faith in me,’ said Reece, who is also shortlisted in the Glasgow Modern Apprentice Awards due to be held this Thurs.

Elaine Napier, who has mentored Reece personally since he started work with her two years ago, said Reece had a professional attitude that would take him far. She said: ‘Reece is already a winner at Napier Hair and Beauty. We’re all really proud of him and I reckon this is just the first recognition of his talents, with many more to come.’

ACT co-director Lynda McGivern said the title was a just reward. She said: ‘We see a lot of young people who put a lot of effort into their training and go on to build successful careers, but Reece is really something special. The win was well deserved and I’m sure he’ll one day be going on to great things nationally and internationally.’
