A two-day blitz on pollution-producing vehicles saw Renfrewshire Council catching eight offenders.

Community safety wardens took to the streets in Paisley to check whether vehicle emissions were within legal limits.

Of the 229 vehicles tested, eight failed and were issued with £60 fixed-penalty notices.

42 of the 229 vehicles were private hire taxis. The 34 taxis from Renfrewshire all passed the test. Six East Renfrewshire taxis were tested with one failure and two Glasgow City taxis were tested with one failure.

The tests were carried out at Wallneuk Road, Paisley, on 26 and 27 March in partnership with officers from Police Scotland, who were responsible for pulling over the vehicles from traffic.

Drivers of the vehicles that failed the emissions test were issued with a fixed penalty notice which will be waived if they provide evidence within fourteen days that their vehicle has been retested and complies with the legislation.

The police also detected a number of minor road offences during the testing, including tyre defects and overweight loads.

All drivers that were tested were given a Renfrewshire Council “Don`t Be an Idler” information leaflet explaining the environmental problems caused by vehicle idling.

Exhaust fumes contain a range of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons and particulates. Emissions of these pollutants are regulated by UK emissions standards.
