Talented young sportspeople were FAST-tracked to success this week at an awards ceremony in Linwood’s On-X leisure centre.

More than 50 local athletes were awarded FAST card grants by Renfrewshire Sports Network.

The Funding Athletes Supporting Talent (FAST) programme provides grants or subsidised access to training facilities for athletes living in Renfrewshire or competing for Renfrewshire-based clubs.

The grant awards are organised by Renfrewshire Sports Network in partnership with Renfrewshire Council and Renfrewshire Leisure.

Young sports stars competing in athletics, gymnastics, basketball, golf, cricket, karate and many more sports received awards.

Ray Nelson, secretary of Renfrewshire Sports Network, said: “Access to training facilities or funds to buy sporting equipment can make all the difference between a young person chasing their sporting ambitions or giving up their sport. With these grants, we’re giving more than 50 young people a helping hand to develop their sporting talents.”

Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said: “Sport is hugely important in helping our young people live healthy lives and also gain the skills and confidence to take into adult life. Anything that we can do to help them pursue their sporting ambitions has to be encouraged and it’s great to see that Renfrewshire Sports Network is doing just that.”

FAST application forms are available from Renfrewshire Sport Development on 0141 889 1110.
