A masterplan designed to unlock the potential of Erskine’s riverfront area could usher in a new era of growth for the town.

Renfrewshire Council planners have devised a development guide identifying a number of uses for 10 hectares of land on the banks of the Clyde.

The town’s riverfront area has been earmarked in the area’s Local Development Plan as one of several ‘transition areas’ in Renfrewshire with the potential for development.

The new guide contains a range of options for how the land could be used to complement the existing town centre.

It is one of 12 which will be produced over the next year, and will be used as a guide for developers and to help market the land.

Councillor Terry Kelly, convener of the council’s Planning and Property Board, which this week approved the guide, said: “The Local Development Plan aims to find suitable and sustainable uses for our land which help create jobs and grow the economy while protecting our communities.

“The land identified in this document is in a prominent location with great transport links and great views out over the river but there has been limited interest when it has been marketed for business and industrial use in the past.

“That’s why we have identified a list of uses for it which offers flexibility to any interested developers.

“Types of development which the area could accommodate might include residential, industrial or office use, as well as any commercial use which would support the existing town centre, such as a hotel.

“Of course, any development would have to pass through the planning process and we would only allow anything which we considered suitable for the area.

“But we hope that the publishing of this guide will stimulate new interest in the site and help deliver economic growth for the town of Erskine.
