Renfrewshire Council has approved an investment package that will see more than £340,000 a year pumped into crucial advice services until autumn 2017.

The move has committed £238,000 a year to Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and £110,000 a year to Renfrewshire Law Centre, to support both organisations in their delivery of valuable services to the area.

Councillor Eddie Grady, Depute Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Finance and Resources Policy Board, said: “This funding package is about putting residents first and demonstrates our on-going commitment to making sure residents across all our communities can receive a broad range of free advice and support when they need it.”

The investment continues the council’s support to both organisations and was renewed by the Finance and Resources Policy Board on 21 January.

The cash approval follows a review of advice services, and comes with a stronger focus on early intervention and prevention, building community resilience, and a more joined-up approach with the council’s own Advice Works service and other advice providers.

Councillor Grady added: “Unfortunately some Renfrewshire families continue to live in poverty with far too many having to choose between heating and eating. Benefit changes continue to put pressure on many of our households, and there are vulnerable people out there who not only need support but who also need someone to be their advocate.

“I welcome approval of this longer term investment package for local advice services which is a commitment to all of our residents who need a voice now and also to those who may need support in the future.”
