High expectations for food waste.
People living in high flats and maisonettes are now able to recycle food waste.
Residents will be able to do their bit for the environment by recycling cooked and uncooked vegetables, meat and even teabags.
Supplies of food waste recycling caddies and bio-degradable liners have been delivered to flatted homes throughout Renfrewshire which have communal waste services.
Residents are urged to use their free liners and 7 litre caddies to recycle all their kitchen food waste. Communal food waste bins will be emptied weekly.
Most residents in Renfrewshire are already using the food waste service, and this last phase will complete the rollout of the programme.
Over 8 tonnes of food waste are currently recycled every day in Renfrewshire, which means less food going to landfill and lower landfill taxes.
The collected food waste produces electricity and fertilizers for crops.
Councillor Eddie Devine, Convener of the Environmental Policy Board, said, “It is fantastic to see that residents in high flats and maisonettes are now able to recycle in the same way as householders can.
“Recycling food waste is a really important step towards a greener Renfrewshire. Instead of dumping foods and it ending up in landfill, we are able to produce electricity and fertilizer for crops by recycling it.
“I’m delighted to see so many people recycling all their food waste. Renfrewshire’s really getting behind these environmental values.”
