Recruits get the message with branding task

A group of teenagers on a popular council-run employment programme have grand designs on their future careers after receiving a branding masterclass.

The Recruit programme is up and running for another summer, with around 50 young people the latest to benefit from the scheme.

The programme is loosely modelled on TV favourite The Apprentice and sees the young people take part in a series of enterprise and skills-based tasks, with jobs on offer for the winners.

This summer’s Recruit is split into two groups, one for S5-6 school leavers, and one for unemployed young people aged from 18 to 24.

Those in the school leaver group were given a special session with Morag Malloy, managing director of Paisley-based design agency Fission Creative.

Morag talked them through the importance of branding for businesses, and discussed the role of designers in producing material for print and websites.

She said: “We sponsored an award at the Recruit finale last year and I was really impressed by what I saw and wanted to be involved.

“The young people are being asked to do things they have never done before and given new experiences which will really benefit them.

“It’s a fantastic programme and I am impressed by what it leads to in terms of improving the young people’s job prospects.”

This summer will see the Recruits take part in enterprise and business-based challenges with a wide range of partners, including Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, St Mirren and Cosmopolitan Hotels.

Councillor Roy Glen, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Economy and Jobs Board, said: “The Recruit has been a fixture in the area’s summer calendar for a few years now and has made a huge difference to the lives and careers of scores of local young people.

“Once again, we are grateful to all the companies and organisations who give up their time to help run the challenges with the young people.

“Youth employment is one of the council’s major priorities, which is why we have put £8million into the flagship Invest in Renfrewshire scheme, designed to boost the local economy and help young people into jobs.

“I would encourage any young people looking for employment or training opportunities to visit www.investinrenfrewshire.com, or pop into the Invest in Renfrewshire business shop on Lawn Street, Paisley for more information.”
