Renfrewshire runners are being urged to get their entries in for this year’s Scottish West 10k Championship and Fun Run and make the most of the early-bird discount that’s just been launched.

The annual event takes place in Paisley, this year on Sunday 25 August and is expected to be the biggest ever. Last year over 1,400 people took part, ranging from serious athletes to fun runners raising cash for charity.

The cut-price entry fees are available from 12 April until 1 June. Runners taking part in the 10k can save £3 on the normal entry fee, while adult fun runners save £1 and children save £2. The discounts are only available online at www.paisley10k.com

Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said: “Each year the 10k is a key fixture in the West of Scotland’s athletics calendar and together with the fun run – it really puts Paisley on the map with both locals and visitors coming to the town to enjoy the event.

“It’s a great opportunity for keen runners to challenge their personal best, plus with finally spring here, now is the ideal time for beginners to dust off the cobwebs and sign up for a healthier, fitter way of life in time for summer.

“The event also helps to raise Paisley’s profile as one of three British Heart Foundation Heart Towns in Scotland while combining sporting participation, top class competition, charity fundraising, and a fun day out. Get online to register now and make full use of the early bird discount.

This year the race is sponsored by Renfrewshire’s Fairtrade Flagship employer MEPC Hillington Park and Paisley Vision.

Jamie Cumming, Commercial Director, Hillington Park said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Paisley 10K. As a major contributor to the economy in Renfrewshire, Hillington Park is committed to supporting local initiatives like this. We hope many occupiers on our Park will put on their running shoes and take part in what always proves to be a fun day out that raises vital money for charity.”

The entry fee for the 10k is £18 with a t shirt (early bird £15) or £12 without a t shirt   (early bird £10). There is a group discount where one free entry is offered for every five paying entries.

The entry fee for the Fun run is £8 with a t shirt for adults (early bird £7) or £5 without a t shirt (early bird £4) and £6 with a t shirt for children under 16 (early bird £4) or £3 without a t shirt (early bird £2). The adult and child discount offers a joint entry for £12 with t shirts (early bird £10).

Scottish Athletics League members are eligible for a further £2 discount on all categories.

Paisley’s 10k is noted for being flat and fast, with a course that takes competitors through the historic town centre, along Paisley canal and Kilmacolm cycle track.
