New textile recycling service to be introduced
Renfrewshire residents who wish to recycle their old clothes are being invited to take advantage of a new free on-demand collection scheme
The council is introducing the new improved service – which also include shoes – from Monday March 18.
Residents can arrange for the bags of textiles to be collected from their homes, or from an agreed place.
“Due to changes in the way recycling is processed, we will no longer be able to accept textiles in blue bins after 17 March, which is why the new service is being introduced.
“This way, residents can still recycle textiles and shoes, but will have more room in their blue bins for other recyclable material such as paper, glass and plastic.
“This improvement will also help the area work towards the target set by the Scottish Government for Renfrewshire to be recycling 50% of its waste in 2013.”
The council has arranged for a leaflet to be distributed to all households with details of the new service.
Items will be collected by staff from the council’s contractor, European Recycling Ltd, who will carry cards identifying them as working on behalf of the council.
To book an uplift, call the Greener Renfrewshire helpline on 0300 300 0300 and choose the option for ‘texting recycling collection’.
Or, you can book it online at www.renfrewshire.gov./recycling
Please make sure all items are dry, shoes are tied in pairs, and there is a knot in the top of the bag to ensure items are kept dry.
We can accept clothes, shoes, curtains, bed linen, blankets, handbags and belts. Please note we cannot accept pillows, duvets or cushions.
As an alternative, residents can also take their textiles to any one of 17 recycling banks across the area.
These are at the following locations – Sainsburys (Braehead); Livery Walk car park, (Bridge of Weir); shopping centre car park (Crosslee); Barrhill Road, and Morrisons (both Erskine); Miller Street recycling centre and Morrisons (both Johnstone); Middleton Road recycling centre, Linwood Sports Centre and Asda (all Linwood); Annex Centre (Lochwinnoch); Anchor Mills Morrisons, Underwood Road recycling centre, and Leitchland Road recycling centre (all Paisley); Haining Road recycling centre, Co-op and Tesco (all Renfrew).
Further textile bank sites will be introduced in the near future and these will be added to the list on the council website when they come into use.
