AgeFest returns to get older generation out and about

Older people in Renfrewshire who are young at heart are being encouraged to come along to the area’s AgeFest series of events.

The three-day council-run event is designed to celebrate the positive aspects of growing older and promote good health and wellbeing.

The fun kicks off with an ‘active ageing’ event in the Lagoon Leisure Centre on Wednesday 20 March (11am).

An intergenerational AgeFest Games will see groups of older people team up with pupils from Paisley Grammar to take on some sporting challenges.

The centre will also host a variety of information stalls and the launch of a new ‘Guide to Health and Wellbeing in Later Life’.

Councillor Iain McMillan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Social Work, Health and Wellbeing Policy Board, will be launching the new guide.

He said: “AgeFest has been a hugely popular event in recent years and I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s activities first-hand.

“There can be a tendency to think things like fitness classes are just for younger people but that’s not the case.

“There is plenty on offer for older people in Renfrewshire and it is really important we provide them with the opportunity to get involved.

“As well as the physical health boost of taking part in activities, it is good fun and has enormous social and mental wellbeing benefits.”

Another ‘active ageing’ event will take place in Renfrew Town Hall on Friday 22 March (2pm) which will also feature entertainment from Glasgow Senior Citizen’s Orchestra and Inverclyde’s WOOPI Choir.

St Peter’s Church Hall in Glenburn will host an ‘open day’ for the Thursday Club of 21 March (12.30pm) with the promise of gentle exercise, a quiz and a raffle.

The same afternoon, AgeFest Variety Programmes in Elderslie Village Hall (1.30pm) and McKillop Hall, Lochwinnoch (1.30pm) will provide a mixture of music, memories and patter.
