As the last day of the old year draws near, it’s time for us to gather at the Cenotaph at 10.30am, near Paisley Cross to honour and remember those that lost their lives in the Glen Cinema Disaster on Hogmanay in 1929.

During the cowboy film ‘The Dude Desperado’ a canister of nitrate film made contact with the live terminal of a battery and began to smoulder, the resulting smoke gave the wrong impression that the cinema was on fire, panic ensued and 71 young children died and 40 were injured in the crush that followed.

On Saturday the 31st December the few remaining survivors of the tragedy along with the Paisley Development Trust, Bishop Tartaglia, Reverend Birss and representatives from the council and the community of Paisley will gather to pay our respects to those that lost their lives that fateful day.

Please join us.

Primary six and seven pupils from 13 Renfrewshire Schools had a smashing time last Wednesday at the second round of the Gateway to the Games festivals.

The pupils from Arkleston, Newmains, Kirklandneuk, Inchinnan, St John Bosco, St James, St Catherine’s, Langbank, Barsail, Bargarran, St Anne’s, Bishopton and Rashielea primaries had all just completed six weeks of after school badminton and were invited to take part.

Last week’s badminton festival is one of many sporting events that will be taking place throughout the school year, including netball, hockey, football and athletics.  Winners from each of the events will go on to compete in the Renfrewshire Gateway to the Games in June 2012 to find the overall Renfrewshire Primary School Champions.

The Badminton festival winners who also qualify for the Primary Games in June 2012 are:
1st Place; Nathan McDougall. Bargarran Primary
2nd Place; Michael Sharp. Arkleston Primary
3rd Place; Lewis Carrey. St.Annes Primary
4th Place; Jack Mitchell. Rashielea Primary

The festivals, run by Renfrewshire Council’s Active Schools team, aim to encourage school pupils to take part in extra curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

Councillor Susan McDonald, Renfrewshire Council’s Sports Champion, said: “It is great to see so many local youngsters enjoying taking part in a variety of sporting activities through these festivals.  It gives them a chance to try a new sport that that may not have played before, like badminton.”

“Gateway to the Games program has been set up to allow talented young athletes to compete for the Renfrewshire Primary Schools Sports Championships, and for Renfrewshire Active Schools to source and recognise their top young athletes towards the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Kids Need Our Ward Lobby of Crucial Health Board Meeting on Tuesday 20 December, 9.30 am, in the Board Room, J B Russell House, Gartnavel Hospital (West End of Glasgow).

On Tuesday 20 December (ie this Tuesday coming), the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board is holding a meeting to decide whether or not to proceed to a formal consultation on the closure of the children’s ward (Ward 15) of the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Paisley. It is vital that Board members attending the meeting hear the voices of children, parents and relatives who believe that the closure would be a catastrophe for our children and for everyone who cares about maintaining this first class service.

Consequently, the KNOW campaign intends to organise a lobby of the Board meeting and is urging anyone who can make it along this Tuesday to do so. We hope to be able to provide transport to anyone who requires it and would ask, therefore, that anyone who would like to come along and/or who would need transport reply to this email.

We understand that Santa will be there to lend his support to the campaign to keep our kids’ ward open! He may even bring a helper or two so you are encouraged to bring your children along.

It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact the closure of Ward 15 would have on our kids and our communities so please make every effort to come along this Tuesday and make your opposition to the proposed closure known.

Hope you can help on Tuesday and keep in touch at the following email address, remember if you need transport from Paisley, let us know, also if you need directions to the building let us know.
