Renfrewshire chosen to host national Fairtrade event

Renfrewshire Council has been chosen to host a national event bringing together people from all over the country to discuss Fairtrade.

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum have asked Renfrewshire to host their annual Campaign Day which invites organisations and volunteers to come together to discuss ways to push Fair trade further, in particular the campaign to make Scotland a Fairtrade nation.

The event will take place in Paisley Town Hall on Saturday 6 November.

Councillor Brian Lawson, chair of the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Steering Group, said: “The decision to hold the Campaign Day in Paisley is further evidence of Renfrewshire leading the way for Fair Trade in Scotland. We are delighted to have been asked as it is another tribute to the strength of the Fair Trade campaign in Renfrewshire.

“Through the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Steering Group we have established an excellent support network for groups, firms, schools, churches and individuals wanting to get involved in Fair Trade locally. Through taking part in various national events and initiatives we’ve built a reputation for leading campaigns to reach out to new people and organisations both within Renfrewshire and beyond.

“The Campaign Day is an opportunity for Fair Trade volunteers and workers not just from Renfrewshire to do this on a national scale, sharing experiences and best practices.”

The Campaign Day will offer the opportunity to:
• Hear first hand how Fair Trade changes lives from producers from the developing world.
• Find out about future campaigning plans from leading Fair Trade campaigners.
• Celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Scotland-Malawi Co-operation Agreement.
• Take part in workshops, including Fair Trade in Malawi, Fair Trade Schools, Fair Trade Towns, working for Fair Trade with local councils.
• get your festive gifts early at a Fair Trade Market Place
• Meet Fair Trade campaigners from all across Scotland
Martin Rhodes, director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, said: “This Campaign Day promises to be an exciting opportunity for Fair Trade
campaigners from across Scotland to come together and plan for the final
push to make Scotland a Fair Trade Nation. Scotland really can lead the
way in its commitment to trade justice.”

The event is open to anyone, is free and includes lunch, however places need to be booked in advance.
