New courts please: Renfrew tennis courts get a £15k upgrade

Budding Andy Murrays and Roger Federers are all ‘set’ to ‘love’ the reopening of Renfrew’s tennis courts after a £15,000 makeover.

The tennis courts in Robertson Park have been reopened after upgrading thanks to funding awards of £10,000 from the Renfrew and Gallowhill Local Area Committee and £5,000 from Braehead Shopping Centre.

The funding has enabled Renfrewshire Council to install new drainage systems, improve the existing blaes, and put in new nets and posts.

Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay said: “I am delighted that the courts have been done up and are ready to be used just in time for Wimbledon, which always encourages people to get out and take up tennis, and the start of the school summer holidays. As part of our Active Renfrewshire strategy the Council is committed to providing people with opportunities to get out and get active.”

The courts are now open to the public and are free to use.

Councillor Bill Perrie, Convener of Renfrew and Gallowhill Local Area Committee, said: “This is a great facility for people of all ages in Renfrew and another great example of the local area committee helping to provide the community with facilities to take part positive, healthy activities. In the last year the local area committee has supported projects to upgrade play areas in a number of local parks as well as helping to fund the popular new skatepark at Robertson Park.”

Braehead’s general manager, Peter Beagley said: “Braehead is a big part of the Renfrewshire community and as such, we always try to help our community when we can.
“Keeping people active – especially youngsters – is very important and with all the media coverage that goes along with Wimbledon, I’m sure there will be plenty of would-be Andy Murrays out there ready to pick up a tennis racket and give the game a go.
“The refurbished tennis courts are ideal for them to have a game of tennis on a proper tennis court.”

Local area committees are made up of local councillors and representatives of local groups including community councils, tenants and residents associations, parent councils, youth groups, church groups and senior citizens groups.

They have substantial budgets to fund local initiatives and support local projects which reflect the priorities and needs of local people.
