October 20, 2009Still Time to Nominate Your Local Heroes
There’s still time for people to nominate Renfrewshire’s brightest stars for a prestigious community award.
The Renfrewshire Provost’s Community Awards recognise local people who have made a special achievement or contribution to our communities or have done something to inspire others.
Now the nomination deadline has been extended by another two weeks to give more people the chance to put forward their nominees.
Now in their twelfth year, there are seven different award categories so that people from all walks of life have a chance to be recognised from children and carers to arts and Fairtrade.
Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson said: “The awards really are a chance to recognise and say thankyou to the many special people across Renfrewshire who have achieved something extraordinary or given something back to their community.
“Often the most amazing thing about the nominees is that they don’t know why they are so special. That’s why it’s so important to nominate and that’s why we’re giving people more time to put someone forward. It can be a friend, relative, colleague, a teacher, a pupil, a group. The awards ceremony itself is always a very special occasion, seeing the winners’ faces and meeting all of them is one of the biggest pleasures of my role as Provost.
“It only takes a few minutes to fill in a form so please spare this small amount of time if you know someone special.”
All shortlisted nominees will be invited along with their family and the person who nominated them to the Awards Ceremony in February at the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew.
Winners receive return flights for two to London, two nights in four star accommodation, £200 spending money and £500 for the charity of their choice.
The categories in the Provost’s Community Awards are:-
Arts and Culture Award, sponsored by Acre Industrial and Cleaning Services
Adult Achiever Award, sponsored by Diageo
Child of Achievement, sponsored by Glasgow Airport Ltd
Carer’s Award, sponsored by Former Provost Nancy Allison
Community Volunteer Award, sponsored by Ciba UK
Spirit of Fairtrade Award, sponsored by the Piazza shopping centre
Special Needs Award, sponsored by Scottish Power and Former Provost Ronnie and Mrs Helen Burns
The deadline for nominations is Friday 13 November. Nomination forms are available from any Renfrewshire Council building or fill in the form online at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/provostsawards.
If you have difficulty finding a form please phone Drew Gibson on 0141 840 3363 or Mairi Brown on 0141 840 3706.
The awards are open to people who live and work in Renfrewshire.
