The Cup Final revisited

A special evening for supporters to re-live the day we won the League Cup for the first time in our history 

Sunday 22nd September, 2013 at 6.30pm is now confirmed as the date for a very special evening to celebrate and remember our historic League Cup Final victory with the players and management who made it all possible.

The venue is the Corporate Lounge at St.Mirren Park and the evening will be attended by members of the Cup winning squad who will talk us through the feelings and emotions of the day.

Doors will open at 6.30 and the format will involve showing highlights of the semi final win against Celtic and the euphoria of the Cup Final win against Hearts with photo opportunities with the players and the Cup from 6.30pm to 8pm at which point the show gets in to full swing.

A real treat is 40 minutes of previously unseen video footage, not shown on the cup final dvd, showing the players, manager and directors before and after the final. This footage will not be available elsewhere – it’s exclusive to this night and not to be missed!

The players attending the evening will talk us through the day with supporters and players sharing the match events as they unfolded. A question and answer session on the night will give real insight to the players and managements emotions of the day. Tickets are on general sale from reception at Greenhill Road.

The price for the evening will be £15 per person which includes a cold sandwich buffet .The bar will be open and this will mean the evening is only available for adults over 18 to attend, due to licensing laws.

Dress code is come as you would to any Saints match !

All proceeds will be shared between the club and the Saints fans Council for council projects and initiatives for the benefit of all Saints fans.

Renfrewshire scores second SFA School of Football

Plans to set up a second school of football in Renfrewshire have been given the go ahead by Renfrewshire Council.

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) in partnership with Renfrewshire Council have developed a proposal to establish a school of football at Renfrew High School.

The plans follow on from the success of the pilot school of football set up at Castlehead High School in 2008.

Members of Renfrewshire Council’s Community and Family Care Policy Board have now approved the plans and a group of around 16 pupils at Renfrew High are expected to begin the year one programme when the school returns from summer holidays later this month.

The School of Football is a project designed to help develop the social and academic skills of pupils from S1 to S3.

It uses football to develop pupil in a range of transferrable skills such as teamwork, leadership, mutual respect and decision making. These skills can then be applied in the classroom environment and socially. Pupils’ continued involvement in the School of Football is dependent on their attendance at school and their attitude towards achievement.

Councillor Eileen McCartin, Convener of the Community and Family Care Policy Board, said: “The pilot School of Football at Castlehead High School has been a great success with extremely positive responses from pupils, parents and teachers. This project not only gives pupils increased opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity but helps contribute to their academic and social development.

“There is a great deal of enthusiasm for a second school of football in Renfrew. Renfrew High is an ideal location given its proximity to the SFA Regional Team at King George V playing fields.”

Castlehead High School in Paisley is one of nine Schools of Football around the country which are part of the SFA’s mission to encourage more people to play the game, more often.

Scottish FA Regional Manager Paul McNeil said: “We’re delighted to be working with Renfrewshire Council and the staff at Renfrew High School to set up a second School of Football in the area.

“The Schools of Football are about more than just playing ability, they aim to mold better citizens, as well as better footballers, through social and educational development.

“The programme at Renfrew High School will be led by Scottish FA player and coach development officer Brian McLaughlin, an experienced coach who enjoyed a playing career at clubs including Celtic and Wigan.

“Based on the progress made by pupils at Scottish FA Schools of Football around the country, we’re confident that the 16 players who will undertake the programme at Renfrew High School will grow and develop over the next two years, and more importantly, take a lot of enjoyment from the experience.”

As part of the programme a group of pupils are selected to follow an enhanced timetable which includes periods of football activity every day.

A licensed SFA coach is employed specifically for the School of Football and is responsible for the daily delivery and coordination of the project but the programme is run in partnership with the school teachers, active schools co-ordinators and football development officers. Tuition includes technical, tactical, physical and mental skills.

Street Football Tournament and Fun Day at St Mirren

Young people from all over Renfrewshire are set to pack in to St Mirren Park for a world cup style tournament and fun day later this month.

Less than a week after the World Cup final, teams of young people from Renfrewshire’s communities will take part in the Safer and Stronger Street Football Tournament.

The massive event takes place on Saturday 17 July and as well as the football there’s a whole host of activities on offer for young people.

Friends and families are also invited to come along and enjoy the huge range of entertainments on offer including street rugby, street hockey, two climbing walls, skate ramp, basketball, tennis, and a bouncy castle.

As well as these there will also be the Renfrewshire Youth Bus, Youth Gym Bus, the Box entertainment unit kitted with dance mats, and a DJ booth.

The Safer and Stronger Street Football Tournament is part of the award-winning Investing in Future diversion activity project.

Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay said: “Investing in Future has been a massive success with these activities going out to different communities every week to provide young people with fun, healthy activities to get involved in. This will be the first time we’ve had an event like this where all those activities, and more, are going to be in one place. We’re inviting young people, and their families, to come from all over Renfrewshire. You don’t have to be playing in the football tournament as there’s so much going on on the day, there is going to be something for everyone.”

Teams taking part in the football tournament have been made up from young people who take part in St Mirren’s street football programme in local communities.

St Mirren manager Danny Lennon said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Street Football Tournament here today at St Mirren Park. Since my arrival at the Club, I have heard a lot about the amount of excellent programmes that are done by St Mirren within the local community. The Street Football programme has already been given a community award and is a fantastic programme and is well known throughout the whole Renfrewshire area.
“Over the years, football skills have been developed through practice and many a quality player has come from playing street football in their youth. St Mirren FC is delighted to be heavily involved within the programme and it is only fitting that St Mirren Park hosts today’s tournament.
“I am sure everyone attending will have a great day whether playing or watching the action.”
As well as the young people the organisations involved in the project will be getting in on the act with their own mini tournament which will see teams from the police, fire service, Renfrewshire Wardens Service, and others go head to head.

The event is free to attend and kicks off at 10am at St Mirren Park, Greenhill Road, Paisley, on Saturday 17th July.

Reducing antisocial behaviour is one of the key targets of the Safer and Stronger Partnership which sees Renfrewshire Council, Paisley Partnership Regeneration Company, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and other organisations working together to make Renfrewshire a safer place to live, work and visit.
