Gerry Baker – St Mirren Legend

Gerry Baker – St Mirren Legend

Paisley’s MSP has lodged a parliamentary motion acknowledging the career of Gerry Baker who sadly passed away at the weekend. Gerry was part of the team that won the Scottish Cup in 1959, his first season with the club.

George said:

George at St Mirren‘Although I never saw Gerry Baker play for St Mirren I have been told how he was such an important part of the wonderful 1959 Scottish cup wining team. My Dad and other members of my family would go as far to say we have never had a centre forward of his class since, at St Mirren Park.

‘For me the legacy of men like Davie Lapsley and Gerry Baker and their team mates in that team are that most of us in Paisley still know about their achievements. Paisley’ s thoughts are with his family but we can say that he gave our town so much during his time here.’

Kelburne Hockey Club

Kelburne

Kelburne Hockey Club

The club was founded in 1969. Since then Kelburne Hockey Club has developed into the most successful hockey club in Scotland. Since it’s formation at accommodation at Whitehaugh, Paisley, the club has flourished from being unfashionable to being the top hockey club in Scotland with very strong mens, ladies and youth sections.

This has been the result of many years of hard work based on a youth policy developing hockey skills at an early age. No other club has been able to so consistently produce home-grown players of the standard Kelburne has in recent times.

“The pictures include Emily MacGuire who played for Gteam GB in the London Olympics 2012 and is shown with her medal along with other girls from the Hockey Club”

The Mens 1st team was the team of the 1990s winning GB & Ireland Championship, 4 National League titles, Scottish Cup and European competitions. In season 1991/92 the Club achieved the ‘Grand Slam of Scottish Hockey’ with all teams winning all SHU competitions entered, which is unique and has not been achieved by any other Club.

After a gap, the current Kelburne team of the mid-2000s are emulating their predecessors and were the SHU team of the year in 2005 and 2007, also winning 5 National Leagues, 4 Scottish Cups, 2 SHU European Playoffs, EHF European Cup in Austria and EHF European Club Championship in Switzerland. 2006/07 was an outstanding season when the team completing their domestic season as ‘Undefeated Team of Scottish Hockey’ with an unprecedented 100% perfect record with all games won.

Kelburne today operates 5 senior mens teams, 3 senior womens teams and numerous junior teams at all age group levels. Last season 2009/2010 the Men’s 1st XI won the Scottish National League for the 6th successive year. In the Euro Hockey League the men have competed 4 times with the best performance reaching the last 16 losing toUhlenhorster, the eventual winners, to a golden goal. The women have just competed for European competition for the first time in their history in Rome.

The club is proud to have 9 current senior Scotland internationals preparing for the Commonwealth games in Delhi.

The clubs ladies 1st team competed in Rome in may 2010 the men’s team have players now training for the commonwealth games for Glasgow 2014 so all very positive from a Paisley club..
