The day Princess Diana brought Paisley to a standstill

Everybody knows how popular Princess Diana is – so imagine the hysteria when she visited Paisley.

Princess Diana visits Accord Hospice

No wonder Princess Diana looks so happy in this picture – after all, she was visiting Paisley.

On June 19 1992, the people’s princess jetted into town to open The Paisley Centre and to pay a visit to the Accord Hospice.

Hundreds of people lined the streets in Paisley town centre just to catch a glimpse of the passionate philanthropist.

Children were carried over barriers to meet her and she was happy to take pictures and give them a cuddle.

Holding a bouquet of flowers and wearing a tartan dress, she walked down the High Street to applause and waved to the crowds.

Stepping of a plane at Glasgow Airport, the beloved Royal greeted everyone with a smile as she made her way to the Accord on Morton Avenue.

She was there to celebrate the grand opening of the Hospice’s inpatient unit.

And the People’s Princess had a massive impact on absolutely everyone she came into contact with on that sunny day.

Accord’s chief executive Helen Simpson believes Diana’s visit had a profound impact on the charity. She said: “It was absolutely amazing and I know that plenty of people still look back fondly on how she was with the patients.

“It was such an honour to have her visit and she had so much empathy towards people.

“To carry out a big event like that for our inpatient opening was a massive occasion that will never be forgotten.

“But it wasn’t just a big occasion for the Hospice.

“It was also important to the whole community of Paisley to have such a dignitary visit the town and be so kind.”
