Emirates to commemorate 10 years at Glasgow Airport with a one-off A380 service.

The occasion will mark the first time a Scottish airport has welcomed an A380 aircraft

Glasgow, UK – 12th February 2014: In yet another first, Emirates, a global connector of people and places, will operate a one-off A380 service from Glasgow Airport on 10th April 2014 to celebrate a decade of carrying Scotland’s passengers to Dubai and beyond.

The occasion is set to be an equally huge milestone for Glasgow Airport as it becomes the first airport in Scotland to welcome an A380 – the world’s largest commercial aircraft – standing over 24 metres high and with a wing span of nearly 80 metres.

A380

Since Emirates began operations at Glasgow Airport on 10th April 2004, it has carried 2.3 million passengers across its global network which now covers 141 destinations. Emirates currently offers over 43,000 passenger seats per month to and from Glasgow, following the upgrade of its second daily service to a Boeing 777 in 2012.

Whether stopping in Dubai or connecting to another destination, passengers embarking on this unique A380 flight from Glasgow can expect a spacious aircraft, with a cabin that is two-and-a-half feet wider than a Boeing 777; a peaceful journey in the world’s quietest long-range jet; on-board Wi-Fi; world-class in-flight menus and the award-winning ice entertainment system.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates Vice President UK, said: “As the largest A380 operator in the world, it is a historic moment to see one of our A380s take flight from Glasgow Airport for the first time. Celebrating 10 years in Glasgow is a landmark occasion for us and it demonstrates our continued commitment to Glasgow and Scotland, which is an extremely important passenger and cargo market for Emirates.”

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, also commented: “Since its arrival in 2004, Emirates has been one of Glasgow Airport’s biggest success stories and its decision to introduce a second daily service to Dubai in 2012 confirmed its status as Scotland’s leading long-haul airline. To bring the A380 to Scotland for the first time will be a hugely significant milestone in our country’s aviation history and an exciting day for the passengers who will have the opportunity to fly on the aircraft and the staff who have worked hard to make it possible.”

The one-off A380 flight will operate as EK028 and will depart Glasgow at 15:35hrs arriving in Dubai the following day at 0200hrs.

Passengers travelling Business Class or First Class will have access to the A380’s on-board Lounge, a dedicated bartender and plenty of space to mingle whilst enjoying world-class delicacies. First Class passengers can also look forward to experiencing the aircraft’s on-board signature Shower Spa, with a state-of-the-art shower system and Timeless Shower Spa kits, as well as the aircraft’s First Class Private Suites.

Emirates is an Official Partner of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Official Airline of the Queen’s Baton Relay. These partnerships strengthen the airline’s commitment to Glasgow and Scotland and will play a key role in profiling the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on a global stage.

Glasgow Airport enjoys busiest year since 2008

Glasgow Airport enjoys busiest year since 2008.

  • Passenger numbers up 2.9% in 2013
  • December traffic up 3.9%

Glasgow Airport enjoyed its busiest year since 2008 after 7.4 million passengers travelled through its doors in 2013, representing an annual increase of 2.9%.

It is the airport’s third consecutive year of growth and much of its success can be attributed to a marked increase in long haul and European traffic which grew by 11% and 15% respectively.

The arrival of airlines such as Wizz Air and Lufthansa Regional contributed to the increase in international traffic, as did the strong performance of long haul carriers Emirates, United and Virgin Atlantic, all of which reported growth in 2013.

There was strong demand for Glasgow’s London and UK regional routes, and the decision by British Airways and Flybe to add extra capacity contributed to a 2.5% increase in domestic traffic.

The growth in the annual figure was mirrored in December’s performance which saw over 455,000 passengers travel through the airport, an increase of 3.9%. International traffic was a particular area of growth, up 11.8%.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “To have recorded our busiest year in five years and our third consecutive year of growth is very pleasing. We enjoyed considerable success throughout 2013 in further strengthening our route network and we committed significant investment to enhancing our facilities.

“Whilst the growth in numbers would appear to suggest a renewed confidence amongst airlines and passengers, we are still operating in what remains a difficult economic environment and achieving further growth will be a challenge. There is, however, much to look forward to. 2014 is set to be a momentous year for Glasgow and our focus will be on ensuring we play our part in the successful delivery of what will be the biggest sporting event in Scotland’s history, the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”

AIR MALTA RETURNS TO GLASGOW AIRPORT IN 2014 WITH ADDITIONAL FLIGHTS

Air Malta has announced it will commence flights from Glasgow Airport in 2014 a month earlier than planned, adding more than 1,300 extra seats.

The inaugural weekly flight from Scotland’s largest city to the Mediterranean island nation will depart on Tuesday 8 April.

Air Malta’s decision to bring the first flight forward by four weeks is based on anticipated demand around the Easter holidays, which fall in April this year.

The Maltese flag carrier will serve the country’s only airport, located near the capital Valletta, every Tuesday until 21 October using 168 seat Airbus A320 aircraft. There are 30 return flights operating, with a total of 10,080 seats on sale.

Malta is a popular tourist destination with one of Europe’s warmest climates. The island has numerous resorts, activities and historical sites, including nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Philip Saunders, Air Malta’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are excited to be returning to Glasgow Airport in 2014 and have decided to start our summer 2014 programme earlier than planned due to an increase in demand for shoulder and off-peak holidays.

“The Maltese climate during the spring is ideal for Scottish holidaymakers looking to explore the island and everything it has to offer.”

Francois Bourienne, Glasgow Airport’s commercial director, said: “We are looking forward to the return of Malta’s flag carrier this year after a successful summer in 2013. Scots can  book flights directly through the airline, or choose from a range of holiday packages available through tour operators and travel agents.”

Air Malta offers a 20kg checked-in baggage allowance and a 10kg hand baggage allowance for each passenger.

The Glasgow flights are on sale now and available to book at www.airmalta.com, as well as through various tour operators and travel agents.

GLASGOW AIRPORT SECURES NEW HALIFAX SERVICE.

French airline Europe Airpost has announced a series of scheduled flights linking Glasgow Airport with Halifax, Canada in summer 2014.

It will be the first time Halifax, which is the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, has been served as a destination from Glasgow Airport since 2009. Europe Airport will operate a weekly service during July and August.

Europe Airpost Dec 13

The busy Atlantic seaport of Halifax looks out over one of the world’s largest natural harbours. It is the largest city in Atlantic Canada and is described as the economic and cultural hub of Eastern Canada.

Europe Airpost will deploy a two class Boeing 737-700 aircraft with 128 seats – 24 in premium economy and 104 in economy – on the route.

Francois Bourienne, Glasgow Airport’s commercial director, added: “Canada and Scotland share rich historic and cultural links and as a result, demand for any route between the two countries is always extremely high. We are delighted Europe Airpost has restored Halifax to our route network and it will provide new capacity during one of our busiest periods of the year.”

Jean-François Dominiak, chief executive of Europe Airport, said: “The launch of this new route meets Europe Airpost’s strategy of diversification with the operation of series of scheduled flights. The Boeing 737-700 aircraft of the company perfectly suits the needs of a summer transatlantic connection between Glasgow and Halifax.”

Flights will go on sale in early January through www.europeairpost.com with prices starting from £499 return trip, including taxes and baggage.

GLASGOW AIRPORT PASSENGER GROWTH CONTINUES IN OCTOBER.

  • Month sees 2.6% growth in passenger traffic

Glasgow Airport reported its ninth consecutive month of year-on-year growth in October, with 714,000 passengers representing an increase of 2.6% compared to 2012.

It is the first time the airport has handled more than 700,000 passengers in October since 2009.

Domestic traffic grew by 3.2%, with strong demand on London and UK regional services driven by an increase in business travel.

glasgow-airport-safety-car

International traffic rose by 2.1%, with traditionally popular sunshine destinations proving popular with holidaymakers during the school holiday week and a strong demand for North American services.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “To record nine months of consecutive year-on-year growth is very encouraging. Our busiest weekend of the year falls in October when thousands fly out for the school holiday week, and this year it was a great success. Our operational teams, airlines, retailers and other business partners deserve huge credit as their effort and commitment is crucial in handling such a large volume of traffic.

“easyJet confirmed in October it will strengthen its route network by adding two new destinations from Glasgow Airport, with flights to the Croatian coastal city of Split and the Greek island of Kos commencing in 2014. We also continue to see the benefits of new capacity which has been added in the last 12 months, like that created by Wizz Air’s Polish services and Lufthansa’s connection to Düsseldorf.

“The second phase of our extensive £17 million investment is now underway, which will transform large areas of the terminal ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games. We will extend the international arrivals area, adding new seating and landscaping a new public space at the front of the building. Passengers will also notice changes in the check-in hall where hoardings are in place and retiling work is underway.

“Other aspects of the refurbishment include new flooring in the airport’s domestic pier, the installation of new heating and ventilation systems in terminal two, and general improvements to our road network and airfield.”

Virgin Atlantic to add 14,000 extra seats from Glasgow Airport in 2014

Virgin Atlantic to add 14,000 extra seats from Glasgow Airport in 2014

Virgin Atlantic has announced an increase in capacity of more than one third on its popular Florida flights from Glasgow Airport in 2014.

More than 14,000 extra seats will be available after the airline confirmed it will deploy a Boeing 747 aircraft for the duration of its 2014 programme.

The move means that up to 54,600 Scots will be able to travel direct from Glasgow to the Sunshine State in 2014, compared to the 40,420 seats on sale this year.

The 455 seat jumbo jet will replace a 314 seat Airbus A330 for 60 return flights between April and October. In previous years it has been used only during the peak months of June and July when Scottish schools are on holiday.

Last month Virgin Atlantic announced it would deploy the larger aircraft on the route, which serves Orlando International Airport, during the month of October this year for the first time to meet additional demand around the school holiday week.

The Boeing aircraft features the airline’s award winning Upper Class cabin, in addition to the Premium Economy and Economy products available on the Airbus.

Edmond Rose, Virgin Atlantic’s director of airline planning, commented: “Since we launched our Glasgow services six years ago we have seen a steady increase in demand and we are delighted to bring our iconic Boeing 747s on to the route for the full summer season.

“Glasgow is an extremely important market for Virgin Atlantic and we are working really closely with the team at Glasgow airport and as we continue to grow demand for Virgin Atlantic’s flights from Scotland.”

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, added: “Our partnership with Virgin Atlantic has been a huge success story. Since the Florida flights began in 2007 passenger numbers have grown every year, and Virgin Atlantic has continued adding extra capacity to accommodate the increasing number of Scots travelling to Florida.

“That Virgin Atlantic is increasing capacity for 2014 by more than a third is a fantastic boost for Glasgow Airport and Scotland. The Boeing 747 is an iconic aircraft and we are delighted it will carry thousands more Scots on their summer holiday next year.”
