Paisley prepares for piping hot town centre event

Paisley is preparing for a piping hot event at the weekend when it hosts some of Scotland’s top pipe bands as they go head to head in the town centre.

The fourth annual Paisley Pipe Band Competition will take place on Saturday 20 July from noon until 6pm.

Hundreds of pipers and drummers from around 19 bands will travel to the town from as far afield as Rothesay, Dunoon and Falkirk to compete before judges from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Bands will take it in turn to parade down the High Street during the afternoon, through the final tuning area at the cenotaph, then down Gilmour Street to the competition arena in County Square.

The competition will take place over four different grades, with the presentation of prizes to take place in County Square at 5.30pm.

Chieftain of the event this year will be Renfrewshire’s Depute Provost, John Caldwell, who is appealing for residents to come along on the day.

He said: “The Paisley Pipe Band Competition is now an established fixture in the town’s summer event calendar and has been a great family day out in recent years.

“The sound and spectacle of hundreds of pipers and drummers in Highland dress making their way through the town will be one to behold.

“The weather forecast is good – as it was two weeks ago during a well-attended Sma’ Shot Day – and I hope to see as many visitors as possible out and about in the town centre.

“Events like this all help to put Paisley on the map as a music and culture destination, with some major Scottish acts on their way to the town later this year when we host The Royal National Mòd – Scotland’s premier celebration of Gaelic language and culture – as well as The Spree national arts festival.”
